If you enjoy being upsold and refusing to have your order taken to the kitchen multiple times until you order more items especially on the weekend, this is the spot for you, unless you’re lucky enough to not have the lady described below as your waitress.
It’s possible she might be part owner as well which would explain it. Also, service is terrible, they’ll bring you hot tea despite asking for cold water, then bring you hot water and walk away, the majority of them have this upset look on their face and attitude as if you owe them a million bucks, only exception was this one kind older lady maybe in her 50s who came by once to help bring some utensils to eat with.
I’ve been here at least 3 times per year for the last 5 years straight, and this is the first time tonight this has ever happened to me, I’ve even had the same lady described below take my order in the past without any refusal, guess times sure are tough, you’re the boss, or if you aren’t the boss you’re being told to upsell specific clients who look like they’ll fall for it.
Came in, waited 40minutes without a reservation on Sunday which makes sense, was told by one waitress to sit at the table on the left while another waitress a minute later tells us that we should be sitting at another table on the right and that we’re in the wrong spot. This is fine considering it’s busy, unfortunately the 40s-50s lady w short hair who manages reservations and the wait list at the front wouldn’t allow my girlfriend (who can barely eat half a bowl of rice on her own) and I to place our order until we added more items, her reasoning was that “the food portion you’ve ordered isn’t enough” multiple times. Initially ordered the small signature chicken pot with 1 rice, fried squid tentacles, and added potato to it. She came by and said “that’s not enough, you’ll need more” and walked away, refusing to take the order. Added fish tofu, and tried to place my order again; she said “that’s still not enough” and walked away again. Finally added the sweet buns with condensed milk and had to call over a different colleague who finally took the order to the kitchen without any further questions.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt because I thought she truly meant well and that the portion sizes weren’t enough for us to enjoy a meal without leftovers, maybe due to “covid/inflation/rising grocery prices”. As you can see in the posted photos once the food came, the portion sizes are somewhat reasonable, which means she obviously upsold us just because she either wanted a larger tip or if she’s part owner, because the restaurant is struggling. It’s still not a honest way to do business with your repeat customers just because they’ve never ordered that one specific dish before.
After paying, I got up and looked around, more than half the tables with 2 people only ordered the same sized small pot with 1 side dish add on at most, and they all received their orders. Absolutely disgusting behaviour to force some of your customers to order more because you think they’re stupid enough to fall for “smaller portions” as an excuse.
Also, fried squid tentacles aren’t as good as before from last year, the typical crunch you would get isn’t there anymore, it’s soggy now arriving. The chicken pot is average but contains quite a bit of bone inside, for $40 for the small or $52 for the large there are much better alternatives both on Alexandra and in other parts of Richmond such as the Walmart Plaza or between Lansdowne or Richmond Centre. Service is terrible as others have mentioned unless you’re lucky enough to go during slow hours or you meet that one specific older lady who at least smiles and tries to make the dining experience a bit better, nobody goes to Asian restaurants for service but if you’re treated like dirt why would you spend money there? The taste isn’t worth the price point or service you receive. Very disappointed.
TLDR: Non existent service as others have mentioned, forced up selling, prices have gone up taste just isn’t the same anymore unless you go during...
Read moreWorst experience ever!!! From waiting for a seat to the food. Super disappointed and DO NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!!
We went there around 8:30 and we were the only group of five people there. Later on another group of five came in to wait. When a large table was ready, the lady only asked if there is a group of five and did not call out any names. The group of people that came later was standing at the front and apparently the lady gave them the seat. We went to tell her that we are also a group of five and luckily there was another big table ready, so we was able to provide us the seat. Otherwise I don't know how long we would be waiting.
We ordered a large chicken pot, with some hot pot ingredients. When the lady came to collect our order, she said all the food will be cooked together in the pot. When I asked isn't there hot pot, she said they no longer have hot pot anymore. When the pot came, all food were mixed together and we basically have no idea how much food there is in the pot itself and for each order of the hot pot ingredients. Most importantly, the pot was full of satay soup and the whole pot had only one flavour and it was really salty!! We tried to ask for some soup to blend down the salty flavour, and the lady said: you don't have any food to cook anymore, why do you need the soup?... I told her the food is really salty, and she finally came us very small amount of soup only.
We also aside of fried rice. Plus the pot and hot pot ingredients, we paid $175 for everything. My parents said maybe we should just go to Big Way...

If you have been a regular before then you will notice after sold to another owner, the portion is only half what it was even i added few extra items inside, and the chickens now all breast part which means they are very dry and tasteless. As my friend said, Chicken breast it’s more cheaper among other parts.
AND YES, the pot does not taste like MUI KEE, the sauces are so watery lack of flavor. It’s totally not what should provide under Mui Kee’s name. They should change a name before really shaming this name because that’s not what others recommended for.
Before sold, one small size pot+ few add on item's is very full for 2 person. Visiting this time, I paid the same price but my pot and my add on items they are so few of them in the pot for the money I paid that ended up i’m still starving after finished the whole pot with my friend. Also my friend got few desserts too since she’s not full as well.
More ridiculously is the 1 hour dine in, if they start counting after they have all the food served i don’t mind, but they took so long for the pot to come and the rice came in the middle when we both rushing to eat a still steaming hot air pot.
I bought dessert and need to cook noodle at home after EVEN I PAID OVER 80 bucks for this pot.
I’m looking forward to see how long this business will close down after sold to someone not knowing how to keep the name that will made people come visit instead of their rip off one time only pricey food.
WILL NEVER RETURN AGAIN UNLESS THE OLD OWNER...
