I have been coming to Samsoonie for numbers of years now since they opened. The food quality, portions and price have yet to change.
Recently came here on a Tuesday night at 7:45pm and the restaurant was still full with customers. You writer your name on a whiteboard and the servers will call you accordingly.
The food here is great. I frequently order either the Chicken Katsu or the Big Don Katsu (pork). It comes out hot and includes two pieces of meat, a portion of rice, side of pickled radish, side of fries, and a side of salad. The pork or chicken are tender and juicy and the ketchup sauce on top taste more like BBQ sauce. The rice has yet to disappoint me and always has a nice chewy consistency; no overcooked or mushy. Best of all it only cost $12.99 and I could barely finish it.
The seafood tofu soup comes in a bigger bowl and loaded with tofu, squid, couple small muscles, and one or two shrimp. The flavor is good too as it does not feel watered down. A tad bit salty but still good. The seafood pancake comes in a small size so that perfect for just a few friends and you want to try a couple different things. The spicy rice cake is a good shout too. It is massive! Loaded with fish cake, japchae noodes, rice cake, a boiled egg and served witha ton of spicy sauce. Rice cake had a nice chew and cooked well.
Your meal also comes with two Banchan, which is the kimchi and thin fish cakes or bean sprouts. Nothing special, just a good starter while you wait for your food to arrive.
The decor loses some points as the place looks beat down both inside and out which can make it super unappealing to go to if you just walked by the restaurant. Good number of servers so its not too hard to wave them down for help. Only takes cash or debit. Th guy collecting your money (assuming its the owner as I always see him) is very nice. TLDR; Generous portions and very...
Read moreRandomly ate here with my husband and baby because the sushi place across didn't have dine-in.
Horrible staff/service.
Not only did the staff take a long time to take our orders and bring out our food, but because I took the time to feed my baby his bottle first before eating myself, I barely had time to touch my meal before we were unexpectedly told to leave because they were closing.
There was another family seated and eating but they were not told to leave like we had been because they were friends of the staff
Never have I eaten in a restaurant where I was told to leave before I was able to finish my meal just so the staff could laze around to take a break. Also, I have never experienced blatant discrimination just because we were not friends of the staff like the other family had been. They had not been told to leave.
So why did they bother to even seat us in the first place when we had initially arrived? And why did they not warn us about closing at a certain time and wanting all customers out by then? Because they just want your money and when it suits them, for you to get the eff out
They are very insensitive to families with children who need to themselves be fed first. The people who work here lack any basic common courtesy.
In other words, their bottom line is to collect your money. They did not appear to enjoy their line of work nor their lives as they appeared to be very miserable.
Do not eat here, unless you like to be ignored and then told to get the eff out.
The only positive thing I can say is that their portions are huge. But that's probably to make up for their horrible customer service so that most people won't complain or bother to write the bad review that they deserve.
Again, do NOT recommend....
Read moreCash and debit only. Hidden gem. Free parking. Great food and values.
There are few Korean restaurants in Richmond and I think this one might be one of the best. It is a small place inside a strip mall across the Richmond Public Market on Westminster Hwy at Richmond. 10 minutes walk from skytrain station. The mall has limited parking. The parking lot is busy all the time. However, usually you can find a spot within 10 minutes.
We went there on Sunday afternoon. It is busy thru out the lunch time. Average around 10 minutes wait for a table. The place doesn’t have fancy decor but has a good vibe. People come here for their good food. They only take cash or debit card and usually means good value.
They have many items on their menu. From hot pot, soup, dumpling, bibimbap, katsu, kimbap, to ramen. We have tried a few dishes and all are great.
We have ordered a small Korean Style Seafood Pancake. The size is perfect to share with few people. It is very good. A must try.
We also ordered a Pork Back-bone Stew. It served as a hot pot. For the medium size, it have 8 good size pork bones. Also has good amount of meat on the bone. The soup is medium spicy and kind of salty but it is perfect to eat with rice (it comes with 2 bowls of rice). This stew can really warm you up on a cold day.
We also have their Korean Style Beef Roll (kimbap) and Big Don Katsu. Both of them are good in size. Kimbap looks like Japanese sushi but definitely have different kind of taste. If you never have kimbap before and you like sushi then you should give it a try. The katsu is pork cutlet. It serves with rice, fries and salad.
The service is fast and friendly. I will come back again to try other items...
