As someone who has been to Mexico multiple times, the food here is so authentic! The people who have left poor reviews may not have actually been to Mexico but this place is a breath of fresh air in the prairies. The food is outstanding and I look forward to eating my way through the menu.
The staff is so friendly and has had great recommendations for the food. The tacos are so tasty- so far I've enjoyed the tongue, fish (was hot, light, crispy), al pastor, and steak. You can't beat how incredibly fresh the corn tortillas are. The spicy avocado sauce is delicious and the salsa! Everything is fresh and tastes like it was made by someone who loves you. The torta al pastor is out of this world. Prepare for messy hands but it's worth it! Friends have had the tamales and said they were outstanding and just as good as what they had in Mexico.
If you're used to Tex-Mex and North American portions (a theme in the handful of poor reviews), this probably isn't the place for you. It's not on the restaurant if you're not used to authentic Mexican food. It's like going to Italy and complaining they don't offer deep dish pizza. If you like deep dish pizza, go to Chicago. If you like Tex-Mex, maybe a trip to Mucho Burrito or Taco Bell would be more appropriate.
Some of the best "restaurants" in Mexico that are incredibly famous are a simple taco truck with 1 person running the entire thing and you eat with your hands. The utensils and plates don't make the meal. It's the ingredients and care that go into making delicious, well-balanced food and this restaurant absolutely...
Read moreWe went there thursday to try it out based on a recommendation of a family friend. Went inside and was pretty full of people, most likely first timers like ourselves. Had a good selection of Food choices, no problem there. Food was OK tasting, nothing out of this world. I had the beef tongue, Chorizo and pulled pork tacos, 3 for 17.99, I Assumed the tacos came with side dishes such as rice or beans, something atleast. Nope 3 small tacos for 17.99$ plus tax. I dont have photos to prove the quality of presentation of food but it was bad. You get the tacos on a paper plate, the tacos are 2 thin corn tortillas with your choice of meat and maybe a sprinkle of cilantro and onion with no sauce whatsoever. Very plain to eat on its own unless you put the salsa thats provided at the front of the store. For charging that much money more value is needed. I left hungry, for 17.99$ you shouldnt leave hungry. My other problem was the service was slow and sloppy, they gave us the wrong order twice and even called us out by name, they took the food back after my daughter touching the burrito and me putting salsa in the box they gave me, my partner seen them close the boxes up and handed them back out to the correct customer, no food safety protocols at all. In total we spent 75$ for a 6 tacos total and a burrito for my child. Total waste of money, food is not worth the money spent. Would recommend this restaurant steps its game up and lowers prices for what you are recieving or add more value to the food, such...
Read moreI find Taqueria Mexicana hard to review because what do you compare it against in Saskatoon… the tacos at shelter, las palpas, la bamba? Arguably these favor a more Tex Mex style. It doesn’t really compare to these places and it’s trying to be something different.
This would have to be a true 3 star review. Average, not exceptional. Is it possible I don’t have the right frame of reference for their menu and food? Yes, so take this review from a white prairie boy with a grain of salt.
Taqueria Mexicana is a quick service restaurant. Expect paper plates, cutlery on the table, self seating. The portions are small for the cost and don’t come with sides. This is my biggest wish that I could have rounded out my order with a side to make it more of a meal than a quick bite/snack.
Otherwise we found the food very simple and basic. The gringa I ordered didn’t have any standout flavor. I went with a few other people and the sentiment echoed was that it’s good enough, but not amazing, especially not at the price point. I wonder if they’ll plan to be licensed to sell alcohol in the future? Without alcohol and sides it’s just a permanent food truck.
I can’t say I’d go here again, but if someone wanted to I wouldn’t object.
Also while we waited for our food I did watch some people in the kitchen eating a sandwich over some...
