A&W Canada — Restaurant in Sooke

A friend of mine and I were on a little road trip out to Port Renfrew a few weekends ago, we stopped in on our way back to Victoria for a quick bite to eat, because I love me a good teen burger. Anyways, the dining room was subpar for cleanliness and the trays used for collecting empty mugs and fry baskets were piled high!! Behind the counter were a couple of young kids as expected in one of these establishments. Which is great, It is good for young people to have a job, and learn early in life how to earn money and be responsible!! A&W, actually was my first place of employment when I was a young boy (15) Anyways, to my point. While I waited for my meal I mentioned to the young fellow behind the counter that the trays for empty mugs and baskets were piled high and that he should probably do something about it. The only reason I mention is to him was because they needed attention but also because he was standing there doing nothing, same with the young girl that was working with him. They were far too busy being on their phones and goofing around instead of doing their job and maintaining front of house. I was met with an ignorant and arrogant reply! I did not react. My meal finally came and I sat down to eat. As I was enjoying my delicious teen burger an older woman working there who looked like she might’ve been in her mid to late 50s. It was her that started maintaining the front of house. I spoke to her briefly and mentioned to her that the young kids should be doing this not her. It is her that should be delegating these duties to the kids. I was then met with mockery and attitude from this young fellow! All I can hope is that the owners of this establishment get a chance to read my review and do something about the ignorance and arrogance of the children that are not doing the job they should be doing. In my opinion the older woman should be the one designating these jobs to these children not the other way around! Hopefully the next time I return to this establishment these issues have been...

I ordered a beyondburger without cheese the order receipt showed that it said “no cheese” but there was a mistake and it came with cheese. They quickly made a new one which was great.

unfortunately when they brought it out they said the original one must be thrown out and no one could eat it. We asked if we could save it for someone who could eat cheese but they said that they have to throw them out “to account for all the burgers”. I understand that this is probably to deter abusing this but the order ticket showed I ordered it without cheese.

I am just disappointed in this waste of food. a&w should allow food that should be wasted to go to hungry people. There are people in this community, just outside the restaurant who could use a meal.

Also the wrappers on the food says “compostable” but there is no compost in the store.

I know fast food isn’t the most environmentally friendly option but I was disappointed on how the staff and the policies waste so much when they could do better. I will go to a Big Wheel Burger from now on because they prioritize the environment and minimize food waste. Hope a&w can...

This A&W used to be my favourite place in Sooke. When I had to use the drive-thru my opinion changed. My order was always the same, but the mistakes and forgotten items changed frequently. My world record was five wrong orders in a row. I live a good distance west of the downtown area, and I am not going to drive back to town for the wrong coffee order or the missing fries or the wrong burger...but I do call. The reception is varied, from "sorry about that" to excuses, arguments and insults. I have been told five times that my forgotten item will be recorded in "the book"...do you have an IOU book?...but when I asked about this the last time I was inside the restaurant, the staff member laughed at me. Two stars for the Teen burgers that weren't screwed up. I just hate going there now. Update: I responded to the owner's request. Haven't heard back. As you can read below, the owner contacted me by e-mail and asked me for more information, which I provided. Since then? Crickets....
