I rarely give bad reviews because like the saying goes “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all”. It was my first time there with my hubby and we were both a little bit under the weather so we decided pho noodle soup. The server was terrible and asked me several times to repeat myself it was annoying then to top it off she added “that’s it?” with a smirk and disapproval in her voice as though it wasn’t enough even though it was a large bowl of soup . Afterward we were served soup and given chop sticks which we don’t know how to use we asked for a fork to scoop up the noodles with and the other female server gave a look of annoyance . That was fine but what topped it off was my husband was trying my soup and one of the female servers spoke in her language to our server and immediately our server said we are not allowed to share ....ummmmm I was appalled at same time confused . I’m a paying customer it’s my first time in the establishment and u tell me I can’t give my hubby a taste of my soup that’s absurd. I repeated what I thought she said and she showed me the bottom of the menu which stated not allowed to share and each person has to spend 8$ per meal . It wasn’t even sharing and if it was ... I’m paying customer and I can give whom I choose my food to taste or take or share shouldn’t matter. I immediately asked for the bill and we left and never to return . I gave 1 * bc they were generous w the meat but I just realized I got charged for it . However I’ll keep 1* in hopes that they will talk to servers to be more customer friendly and hire servers w good social skills and the owners will remove such absurd rule if it is indeed a rule bc it drives away customers . If I was the server I would suggest that she could have said “sorry but customers can’t share or taste each other s meal but for this one time we ll alllow it “ but the attitude such as grimaces frowning leading up to the confrontation was simply put “ rude and distasteful “. A note to owners : hire staff who will respect your empire bc u worked hard to put such an establishment to have a distasteful employee (s) ruin all those hard earned...
Read moreWe have eaten at Kim Hoang a number of times. Serving simple and authentic Vietnamese food, it has become one of our go to places for delicious food.
The restaurant is very typical for a Vietnamese restaurant. It is simple and functional. There is wear and tear showing and the busy establishment makes major renewals a challenge. Colours are the typical mint green found everywhere in Vietnam. Tables are diner style with simple comfortable seats. Condiments are located at each table, along with spoons. Everything is clean and serves its' purpose.
Service is very efficient and friendly. Like many Vietnamese restaurants, this is primarily a family operation. You will be quickly greeted and pointed towards a table. Menus are provided and orders taken. In just a few minutes, food is on the table. If you're hungry and don't want to wait, this place is a good choice.
The food is excellent. Flavors are nicely balanced and everything is fresh. I had their pork chop with meat pie and pork skin dish. It is a favorite of mine, although this version does not come with broken rice or a fried egg (many do not these days). We have also sampled the spring rolls and a rice roll platter with ground shrimp on sugarcane. Everything was very tasty.
Kim Hoang is well worth a visit. Go hungry as the...
Read moreI ordered the Bun Bo Hue, an order of spring rolls (4pc) and a lemonade soda. Total came to about $32.
Their Bun Bo Hue was great. The broth had the perfect amount of spice. It had a kick, but not enough that will blow your head off. The broth also had a hint of sweetness to it. The portions they give is good too. They give lots of brisket, and the ones they cut here are thicker than other restaurants. The veggies and sprouts they give on the side are fresh.
The fried rolls come in orders of 4pc. These rolls were okay. The outside was crispy, the filling had nice amounts of pork but was a bit mushy. They do however taste very nicely with the fish sauce.
I arrived with 2 other people at about 6:30 PM on a weekday and there was about 7 other tables dining. We waited under 10 minutes for our food. The restaurant is fairly clean, and there this charm about the place that feels like you are dining at an auntie's house in Vietnam. For service, I enjoyed the lady who served our table. She was polite and was quick with service.
I can see why my friends recommend going to this place. Overall, it's about a 8.5/10. I do consider this probably the best soup in the Guildford area, hence i'm bumping...
