TenGOKU super sushi-yian?!?
Came here a couple of times a decade ago before it went through its transformation. Let’s just say it wasn’t that great before. However, been back twice ever since the younger generation of the family took over. The atmosphere and food quality elevated one level up. And the services are more attentive and welcoming now.
Here were the food I ordered this time around;
Tako wasabi. Nicely seasoned and fresh with a distinctive taste. One of the better ones I had. Good job! Appetizer tempura. Decently okay, fluffy batter with a light crisp. Assorted sashimi. Very fresh and of generous portion, I think it is in competition with Sushi California up the street. (I personally preferred bite size portion tho lol). Albacore toro, saba, chopped scallops, ikura, salmon belly nigiris. Fresh! Especially the tuna toro! (Sadly sold out of chu toro and o-toro). Uni nigiris. Very fresh and generous portion of uni! Thank you! Spider roll. Ordered this to see how the soft shell crab is. Just as I thought, Korean katsu style, jawbreakers! Lobster roll. Came with generous portion of salad but couldn’t taste any thing lobster about it?!? Oyster motoyaki. Once again, a little undercooked, the middle of the oysters were still a bit raw. (Attn chefs: just because the cheese melted doesn’t mean the food inside is cooked!). Seafood yakisoba. Maybe a tiny bit more sauce is recommended.
This place is located across the street from Guildford mall on 152nd Street and it has its own little private parking lot.
Inside is quite spacious with a modern interior layout and design. I actually like it cause it has character, not so typical and boring.
The service was very friendly and at the touch of a button (yes it’s Korean owned lol).
It’s still a little shy of being tenGOKU super sushi-yian, but the food quality was definitely a lot better than before and I came back twice to make sure of its consistency. Everything was really fresh and the portion were comparable to places like Sushi California, Sushi Garden, etc…, my only complaint would be the oyster motoyaki (don’t feel bad, a few places made the same mistake lol)
I would repeat especially now they open till 12am during the...
Read moreI have never been more disappointed with a restaurant.
This used to be my go to sushi place so naturally I was excited to go back when it reopened. Apparently it is now under new management, with a completely different staff and menu.
My boyfriend and I were sat down when the restaurant was practically empty. We were given menus, and left alone. No one came by for at least 5 to 6 minutes while we looked at the menu. In the meantime, the table right across from us was checked up on while we were ignored.
At this point in time, I started paying attention to the time. It was a full 7 minutes and we would have been further ignored had I not said something to the waitress. She then finally brought us water and sent over someone else to take out order.
I had the order written down on my phone and my boyfriend was reading it off. The waitress then interjected that she did not have anything with her to write with and took my phone from my boyfriend to put in the order! This is highly unprofessional and not acceptable. At this point, we were quite uncomfortable but decided to wait as we had finally placed an order.
The first half of our order came out quickly. Food was fine, not as a good as it was before. I am a vegetarian so I can only eat certain rolls. The rolls my boyfriend ordered were out, and one roll we were splitting came out. I ate 2 pieces of the roll, and waited for the two rolls I had ordered. While I waited, I requested more water.
I never got my refill on water, and we never got the other parts of our order. After waiting for another 15 minutes, my boyfriend suggested that we leave and go to another sushi place. They made us pay for the food we had gotten, no apology offered.
I have been a loyal customer at tengoku for years with my family and introduced it to my boyfriend 3 years ago. It was our go to place for years. After tonight, we will never go back. I have never been so insulted because of a restaurant experience nor been so upset. We will go to Akasaka, a much better sushi...
