My Favourite Café in Downtown: Better Than Neo, Aroma, Dark Horse, Second Cup, etc.
It’s not a café for your instagram story, meaning its not a super curated café, nor is it a spot for gimmicky or novelty items. But what it is—a place with good people and great food-- should be acknowledged. Let me explain:
The Food Not only are the coffee and drinks great, but they also serve real food. You know those cafés with overpriced sandwiches and wraps, cashing in just because they can (see, e.g Creeds)? Au Pain Doré is the antithesis of that. Their sandwiches, soups, and pastries are made fresh daily. They even bake their own bread—and it tastes amazing. Everything here is sold at a fair price.
Recommendations: Smoked Salmon Sandwich Roast Beef and Mushroom Grilled Cheese (made with brie cheese on a French loaf!) Tuna Niçoise Chicken Bacon Avocado
The People In today’s neoliberal order, where every aspect of life feels commodified, one can feel fragmented and isolated even when they interact with people on the daily. This extends even to the café experience, which, when co-opt can feel transactional: you grab your coffee, maybe a snack, and then you sit down or leave. But, for one reason or another, the people working in Au Pain Doré stop you from feeling like this, combating with their warmth and kindness. They remind you what genuine human connection feels like (esp. if you're a regular) and that is purely a testament to the awesome staff. Shout out to Charity, Caesar, Aydin, Nicole, and...
Read moreI ordered delivery. This restaurant replaced items with things that contained high allergens. Because of this I could not eat them. My daughter's creme brulee was also basically a melted mess. That might have something to do with the fact that it took an hour to have it delivered after it was picked up, but it's hard to say. She did say it was lacking in vanilla flavor as well. The chocolate almond croissant was okay. I would have to ask my neighbors how the things that came as replacements for what I actually ordered were. Of course doordash will do nothing about the situation because they think someone with allergies should pay for food they can't eat when their merchants mess up. Due to the fact that you can't rely on this bakery to send the right thing or doordash to correct their mistakes, I would suggest not ordering any food from here unless you were there in person, and wanted...

1956 - Au Pain Doré is founded 🏵️
In 1951, Odette and Roland Etienne make their way to Canada with their children Joëlle (four years old) and Jean-Marc (11 months old). In 1956 they will found la Boulangerie Au Pain Doré at 6838 rue Marquette in Montréal, where they will get the attention of restaurateurs and hoteliers with the most effecive advertising possible: word of mouth. In the early 1980s, Jean-Marc and his wife Diane will take the reins and turn Au Pain Doré into the boutiques that we know today.
