GO TO CAPTAIN JOHN DONLANDS NOW! Don't walk, RUN! Talk about exceeding ALL expectations. First time trying their food tonight, and it won't be my last. Extremely impressed. Where do I start? I got their seafood platter, fish, shrimp, scallops, fries & coleslaw — it was a huge portion and it was pretty affordable, too! Their fish was lightly battered, the fish itself was as fresh as it gets, tender, snow white and flaky. Their battered shrimps were big, juicy, cooked to the right golden colour. Their scallops - wow - I never knew scallops could taste this GOOD! They were cooked to perfection, mildly/slightly sweet, melt-in-your-mouth texture. The french fries must've been handcut with skins still on them, also cooked perfectly and very tasty. The coleslaw I'm assuming is homemade because it was fresh, crisp, refreshingly flavourful. Honestly, every single thing I had from them was 10/10, insanely delicious — and I'm picky about seafood because my family comes from the maritimes, haha. I also rarely ever write reviews. If you're looking for the best fish and chips, best shrimp, best scallops, best coleslaw in Toronto, look no further! I'm going to tell everyone...

Love this place! I've been here twice for takeout already (and attached photos from each order). Got the 5 piece halibut family pack with fish, chips, housemade tartar sauce and coleslaw the first time, and got the 10 piece haddock family pack (fish, chips, sauce and coleslaw) and some onion rings the second time.

If you don't know your fish (like me), halibut is more firm, haddock is more flaky. Both were absolutely delicious! Light, crispy batter, great quality fish.

Each time, we walked over, ordered there and then walked around until it was ready, and then walked back with our food. Even after a 20minute walk in snow, wind and -11°C weather, food was still hot and crispy when we got home! Their housemade tartar sauce and coleslaw are so good, we're definitely going to grab extra next time.

There was a bit of a wait each time to pick up around rush hour since there's usually only 2 people working hard frying, packing and taking orders. But the owners are super friendly and considering the line out the door from locals and 3rd party delivery, it really says something about the quality...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💯 ©bigfix™productions Captain John's Review July 2024.

Captain John's rocks! Up until I sourced this authentic English-style chippy, I stated Beaverton Restaurant Inc. was the best in Ontario. John's is simply the best in Toronto. Delightfully fluffy & crisp, non-greasy batter wrapped around two generous portions of cod, coupled with thick, perfectly sized, proper-tasty fried chips. Both brother Jones & I agreed that this really was the best chippy in town. Having been born & raised in England, I much prefer to eat my fish & chips at the chippy or literally from the bag on my way home - fresh from the fryer, not delivered. The owner actually set the perfectly cleaned table for us & provided tartar sauce & all the accompaniments - true service with a smile. We chatted with the many regulars that were visiting to pick up their pre-orders, most had been eating there for years. Perfect menu, fast service & great value - sooo happy to have found a local, decent chippy in...

Ordered takeout for 1 halibut (6 oz) with fries and 4 haddock (6 oz) with fries for 2 people. The batter to halibut ratio is really good. Outside is crispy and inside is tender and flavorful. Both batter and fish is seasoned well. The Haddock is batter slightly thicker, but still taste pretty good. The fries portion is really big, so I would recommend getting 1 fries for 2 people to share. Food is nicely packed for take out with paper boxes and hole punched paper bags to ensure crispiness. The service is really nice as well. I can't wait to come back for more.
