I went to Delicacy Kitchen tonight after seeing an ad on Twitter from BlogTo, saying that this restaurant is an outpost of a Chinese chain. Since there were only two of us, we ordered a half Qinxin chicken, a half Peking duck (served 2 ways) and a dumpling in soup - items listed as chef’s recommendations on the menu. The dumpling and chicken were average - “Qinxin” is just a fancy name they use for a regular “plain chopped chicken” - nothing special. When they brought the Peking duck out, we were surprised to see how small it was (the size of a half chicken). The worst part was that they took us as idiots! After skinning the duck at the table, they were supposed to bring the remainder of the duck back into the kitchen, scrape out the rest of the meat, stir fry it, and serve it with lettuce as the second dish. Literally one minute after the server took the skinned duck away, another server brought out the stir fry, bragging about their speed. We knew for certain that they didn’t serve us the duck they skinned in front of us, and I initially thought it’s no big deal as I thought they’d simply serve us the meat from another duck they prepared earlier. I was completely wrong!! What they served us was bits of fried pork coated in flour! We chose not to confront them at the restaurant as it would be impossible to prove their wrongdoing if they insisted that they served us duck meat, unless we could do a DNA test on the spot. I’d rather save my energy and write this post so everyone knows what to expect from this restaurant. Did I mention that we barely got any service even though there were fewer than 10 customers (including ourselves) at the restaurant? After we finished the chicken, our plates were full of bones, and we had to empty the bones into the pot they used to serve the dumpling so we could have cleaner plates to use. Yes, they didn’t even bother coming over to collect the pot after we’re done with the dumpling! There’s no doubt Delicacy Kitchen is on my black list...
Read moreWe were so badly (and rudely) treated by the staff there, my friends and I will not be returning.
There's simply no excuse for the treatment we had last Saturday. I had made reservations about 2 weeks in advance and was eager to show it off to a friend.
We arrived a tad early, and could see the place was full. 1 young lady dealing with calls, seating clients, delivering food, clearing tables etc. So we waited.... and waited. About 15 mins later, a Caucasian couple came in and were quickly seated just where the young lady had indicated she was cleaning up for us!
So I asked her about it. Her reply was so rude: 'I'll deal with that later, ok. I'm very busy" Anyway, after waiting some more (30 mins in total) my friend decided she'd had enough, so we informed the rude one that we were leaving (she was so unconcerned) and we left.
This must have been my 4th visit to the restaurant with other friends. I discovered it the first time. The owner, a lovely gentleman called Michael, was in attendance, making sure things went ok. We were all so impressed, I wrote a 5* review when I got home. I'm 100% taking that back.
Maybe it's because Michael's not around, but the vibe is different and has slid down considerably. I was there with 3 other friends about 6 weeks ago - the place was almost empty - probably because it was a weekday. But, the ambience was looking a bit tatty, and taste of the food was not as great as I've had there before, and this was confirmed by 2 of the others. Still, I thought it was a one off, which is why I decided to give it another go. Not any more.
Well, take your chances if you want, but these two women of colour will be nowhere near this restaurant again. We will not put up with this kind of shoddy treatment, and the standards (food and environment) are a C at best - tacky...
Read moreWhile looking for a good HK-style Chinese place near Yorkdale, I found Delicacy Kitchen. The reviews looked promising, and my friend and I made the drive south to check it out. The first red flag was that the dining room was almost empty on a Friday evening. For many years, this location was a very well-respected Italian restaurant, and it seems that Delicacy Kitchen did not do any real changes to the dining room. The ambiance was pretty boring and dated, with nothing really distinctively Asian about it. There is a lot of seating, although only a small section was being used for the 3-4 tables we saw upon arrival. We ordered two types of dim sum (hargow and beef tripe with scallion/garlic) in addition to a plate of beef fried rice noodles and chicken with broccoli. The dim sum was good, with the har-gow having a decent amount of shrimp in each dumpling. Unfortunately, we both felt the two wok dishes were very underwhelming. I was expecting beef with ho-fun noodles (wide), but instead got rice vermicelli noodles you would expect in a pad thai. The dish had zero smoky wok-hei and contained pieces of egg. The chicken and broccoli was pretty mid-level, but again, it had no wok-hei or noticeable flavor beyond some basic garlic. Fortunately, the service was quite good and the food was brought out quickly, not that I'd have expected a wait with the amount of customers seated upon our arrival. I'd strongly pass on this place. It's really...
