I brought my sister when she was visiting Toronto from Ireland but still working at home. She had one precious 1 hour for lunch that we could share together and we decided to go to gold standard.
We ordered the two standard sandwiches from their small menu. But at least we assumed we would get these fast and be able to share some time together.
When we ordered we said we would wait inside reunion coffee and were told by the male cashier that they had a whole system and not to worry.
30 minutes later we saw nearly everyone else who was standing behind us have food but not us. My sister went to go check what was going on and the femme cashier was really rude to them and basically told them to back off and wait their turn. Even though "our turn" was clearly before many other people who were already served.
10 minutes later I went out to try understand what was happening and still no food. They told us they were too busy and could not give us our order. We spoke about how it was not appropriate to waste nearly an hour of a patrons time with no apology and leave people without food. They admitted that their printer malfunctioned and didn't print our order but they aren't going to do anything about it.
They then offered a refund ( the literal least they could do) with a sarcastic apology and we said we just really wanted the food which my sister would then have to eat back at her desk. They said they were too busy and couldn't give it to us. While being incredibly dismissive and rude.
I have worked in the service and hospitality industry for over 10 years as a chef in a spectrum of restaurants/ cafes and I have genuinely never experienced the dismissive behavior that they showed today and would be appalled if any establishment I worked in treated our customers like this. I would usually not be someone that leaves a review because I understand how hard the industry can be. But for the standard of their small sandwiches and how they felt they could treat customers, it reeked of privilege of easy good reviews and not feeling like they have any owness to the care given to customers.
These are greasy sandwiches at the end of the day. Not high dining. It's not my first time having an unpleasant experience with the service given there but this was certainly just a really truly awful one which stole precious time I had to share a meal with my sister
They returned a refund but kept the 20% tip...
Read moreThis place is a local gem. Whoever gave this place less than 5 stars knows nothing about anything. Not only is it one of the most unique breakfast spots in town, it's also sandwich perfection. The burger is a small, crushable and steamy Detroit style slider with the perfect dose of pickles, thinly sliced onions and melted cheese. It comes wrapped in tinfoil to keep it steamy, so the guy that said it was soggy clearly missed the point. And the breakfast sandwich! Holy sheeeit! I don't know which I like more. It's one of the best breakfast sammies for sure. Get both. They're nice and light. Grab a coffee at Reunion Island next door and enjoy your treat.
Also, to the guy that gave this one star. Okay, I get it, you're upset they wouldn't change the burger for your kid - kind of annoying, but go to hell. One star makes a difference and this place is clearly amazing, you grump. Take your kid to McDonald's if you want to customize the sandwich. This place has integrity and wouldn't compromise their burger. It comes one way for a reason....
Read moreEveryone loves this neighbourhood hole-in-the-wall. I can't count the amount of times I've been to Gold Standard, they're deeply reliable for excellent burgers. The other day they were out of meat so they made me and my pal a couple of Four Guys with impossible patties and it was so good. My only complaint is that the potato rolls they use are Martin's, which are delicious, but the owners of that company spend a lot of money supporting christofascist politicians in the USA. Yikes! Would love to see them source potato rolls from Lev Bakery or another worthy local bakery. But that's a problem for whoever owns Gold Standard, the workers are out there killing it every day and they deserve your love and generous tips. Bless your hearts, see y'all soon...
