Papi Chulo's — Restaurant in Toronto

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary at Papis, and I must say, it was an evening to remember. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and seated by the attentive staff. The cozy ambiance and inviting decor set the perfect tone for a special evening.

Being avid food enthusiasts, we decided to try a variety of dishes, and the steak tacos and shrimp tacos immediately caught our attention. The presentation of the tacos was impeccable, showcasing a burst of colors and fresh ingredients. With the first bite, we knew we were in for a treat. The steak was perfectly cooked to our preference, tender and full of flavor, while the shrimp was succulent and accompanied by a delightful combination of spices. Each bite was a journey of taste, and we savored every moment.

What truly elevated our dining experience were the margaritas. They were, without a doubt, some of the best margaritas we've ever had. The balance of sweetness and tanginess was spot-on, and the drinks were skillfully crafted to perfection. They complemented our meal wonderfully and added a layer of festivity to our celebration.

However, the real star of the evening was our server, Tina. Her genuine kindness and friendliness made us feel like we were dining with an old friend. She was attentive to our every need, ensuring that our glasses were never empty and that we had everything we required for a pleasant evening. Her recommendations were on point, and her knowledge of the menu was impressive.

As we reflected on our evening at Papis, my husband and I both agreed that it was a fantastic choice for our anniversary celebration. This restaurant is an absolute joke. We arrived at 7:30pm and went on the list for a table for 3. We were told there was 1 table in front of us and to wait inside. By 8pm we asked the host if we could go to the bar to have a drink while we waited, she said she’d have to check and let us know. She went to “check” and came back to the host stand and started speaking to other people. We didn’t want to bug her so we waited a few minutes and asked about standing at the bar, she said it was too full so we continued to wait. She then went on to allow 2 people who walked in to stand at the bar. We then, after 40 minutes of waiting and seeing numerous tables being sat, asked again if we could stand at the bar while we waited, she said yes but not to block the pathway. We then saw a table of 4 leave so I went to the front to ask her if we could have their table and she said there was a table that had it reserved… DESPITE their Instagram and website saying they don’t take reservations. We obliged and continued to wait while we saw more and more tables being sat. While we waited at the bar, we ordered $18 margaritas which we saw them pouring out of a premade cocktail jar… if I’m paying $18 for a drink, it should be made to order, especially at a Mexican spot. This all being said, we waited another 15 minutes for a table and still weren’t sat. I proceeded to go onto their Instagram page and let people know about our experience. I posted a comment about their poor customer service, premade cocktails, and our experience and they decided to BLOCK me and delete my comment on Instagram. I honestly have not had such a terrible experience at a restaurant ever. I would avoid this spot...

One of the most disappointing service experiences I’ve ever had.

The restaurant operates on a walk-in-only policy, so we waited an hour in freezing cold and snow. While waiting, we saw a group of five girls arrive after us and initially be told they’d have to wait like everyone else. However, after chatting with the staff, they were allowed to enter and take spots at the bar. At no point did the staff check with our group—or others ahead in line—if we’d like to take the bar spot first, despite us having waited 30 minutes by then.

When we finally reached the front of the line, we had to wait another 30 minutes for a spot. When it was finally offered, it turned out to be at the bar with no seats—something the staff failed to communicate beforehand. We came here to enjoy food and drinks in comfort, but instead, we were left holding our bags and wearing our jackets while standing at the bar.

Even more frustrating, there were open tables the entire time we were inside, but the staff refused to seat us there or rearrange them to accommodate our group of five. Despite politely asking, they were unaccommodating and dismissive.

While the food and atmosphere were decent, the service was rude, inconsiderate, and unprofessional. Our group had high hopes for this visit, but the experience was deeply disappointing due to the lack of fairness and basic courtesy.
