FIRST VISIT REVIEW:

Service and atmosphere were lovely. Waitress was attentive and polite, and the dining area and was well-designed. Washrooms were clean.

The issue is the food. I ordered a wagyu udon and for $20 + tip + tax, the portion is far too small. The udon was clearly undercooked, so it was not pleasant to chew on. The broth was strong but almost overbearing, and the beef was seasoned fine but didn’t have chemistry with the broth. Both broth and beef were rather strong in flavour and seemed to clash. I got a single slice of naruto and a soft boiled egg that wasn’t runny enough.

For the price you pay, you’re better off going to Raku.

SECOND VISIT REVIEW:

Decided to try Sanuki again months later as I was hoping it had improved since my last visit.

Service and atmosphere were great, similar to last time.

This time, I got the curry tonkatsu udon, but again my issue has been the food. The texture of the tonkatsu breading was nice, but the skin and breading completely came off of the meat when I so much as touched it. It didn’t stick on at all and fell apart.

The curry base was nothing special, kind of tasted like regular box curry. Tokyo Kitchen and Stuu Stuu have way better curry bases.

The udon texture has improved in that it no longer is undercooked, but as other reviews have mentioned, they’re rather too soft and don’t give off a firm, bouncy texture you would find at other udon places. I also don’t find them smooth enough.

The green onion was surprisingly disappointing as well. You would think this is a simple garnish, but for some reason the green onions came off rather mushy and not crunchy or refreshing. For $20+ a bowl, it’s criminal how badly butchered everything ended up.

Unfortunately, this was once again a disappointing meal all entirely because of the food. It’s such a shame that Raku is the only decent dedicated udon shop in downtown, as it’s rather expensive and out of the way.

The number of reviews and the high scores are rather suspicious, because the place isn’t that busy and hasn’t been open that long. I know in the past they’ve “bought” reviews by offering free drinks, though I’m not sure if this is still the case. Either way, do not trust the...

My boyfriend and I had a very disappointing experience here today. We were here for lunch at around 2pm. The restaurant was not busy. They were sold out of the tonkatsu curry udon. The appetizer shrimp tempura was pretty good. However, the signature wagyu udon and flamed pork belly udon came out about 20 minutes after we ordered. The quantity and quality of the udons seemed significantly different from the photos we saw on Google reviews. The amount of wagyu and pork belly was about one fourth of the amount we saw on other reviews. We called a server politely and asked about the quantity showing the photos we saw on Google reviews and comparing them to our udons. The server was very rude and just told us that the quantity was changed and left. The quality of the udons were also very mediocre and way below our expectations. We checked the reviews again and realized that there were photos that were taken less than a week ago and some less than 2-3 weeks ago. We asked for the manager but the server told us that he is not available. The chef came out from the kitchen area and asked us about our concerns. We explained the situation and asked when the quantity was changed. The chef informed us that it was changed a month ago. So we showed him pictures from less than a week or two ago but the chef did not listen and just told us that the photos are old photos, even though they were clearly taken a few days ago according to the reviews. He did apologize but did not seemed to be sorry at all as he had his hands on his hips and was clearly lying to us and raising his voice. The way they handled the situation was extremely unprofessional and inappropriate and we will not be coming back. We paid $60+ for what seemed like less than half a portion and was not filling at all I really don’t understand the...

Don’t be fooled by the high ratings! This place is mediocre and overly priced! My friends and I were excited to try this place as it was reminiscent of Marugame (in Hawaii/LA).

Where to begin…the wait for a table was 30 mins, the wait for food was 45 mins! Our party of 4 ordered 4 bowls of udon, and only 3 bowls arrived together. We had to inquire with multiple servers to check up on the order. The kitchen staff (there were 2 men behind the counter) had no sense of urgency or seem to be bothered by the fact that many tables were waiting for their food and just took take their time.

Onto the food…the curry broth was watery (not your typical thick Japanese curry consistency) and was overly salty, udon noodles were not chewy—but soggy— which didn’t taste fresh, and on top of that everything was COLD! Even the pork katsu was room temperature. My partner ordered the shrimp tempura udon and unfortunately the shrimp was soggy—not crispy, and fell apart upon biting into it. Again, none of the bowls had piping hot broth as you would expect udon noodle soup. We also had to flag down our server multiple times for water refills or missing utensils. The only positive note to this whole experience was that the chicken kaarage was decent in size, and flavourful.

This was NOT worth the $22/pp before tax and tip. You’ll also find yourself swatting away fruit flies as you try to eat your meal. Take your money elsewhere as there are way better Japanese udon options...
