Disappointing experience followed by food poisoning: My husband took me out to what he thought would be a fancy meal for my birthday. The dining experience was disappointing, but turned even more unpleasant as I ended up getting food poisoning from the meal. Not what we expected from a $290 meal for two (which included only $24 of alcohol since my husband is a teetotaler).
Poor service: The ambience of the place was initially quite impressive, and the service seemed superb. But we ended up having to wait for almost an hour between the time we had finished our appetizer and the arrival of our main courses. At the 50 minute mark, I asked the waiter why there was such a long delay. His only response was that he didn’t know, and the food would be coming. We waited for another 10 minutes before the main courses finally arrived. Neither the waiter nor the manager apologized for the long wait. The two gentlemen seated next to us had arrived after we had finished our appetizer. By the time our main courses arrived, they had already finished eating, paid and left.
Mediocre food: The lobster appetizer was quite good and we enjoyed it. The main courses—not so much. First of all, they were lukewarm. We were so hungry by then we didn’t want to wait even more by sending them back. The scallops I ordered were not well seared and the flavor was too tangy. My husband wasn’t too impressed with his halibut either, saying that all the different ingredients on the plate detracted from the flavor of the fish rather than enhancing it.
Food poisoning: To make a disappointing experience even more disagreeable, I woke up in the middle of the night after the meal with abdominal pain and bouts of diarrhea throughout the rest of the night. I felt so weak and tired the next day I had to cancel my dates with my friends. The meal at Scaramouche basically ruined half of my long-awaited vacation in Toronto. For the next two days, my abdominal pain persisted and I couldn’t enjoy all the lovely meals I had been expecting to have in Toronto.
My husband was really upset that I got sick after an already disappointing experience. He decided to call the restaurant and talked to the manager there. The only thing this manager was willing to offer was a certificate for two free drinks for our next meal there, and he wasn’t kidding. Even if he had offered us a free meal with free alcohol, I will not be returning. Food poisoning is no laughing matter. If I were you, I would take my...
Read moreOur godfather treated myself and my brother to a wonderful dinner at Scaramouche Restaurant.
The food was fantastic. Starting with appetizers such as two orders of homemade Sourdough Bread & Hummus and some Artisanal Dry Cured Ham with Belgian Endive, Celery Heart, Roasted Delicata Squash, Pine Nut Relish, & Chardonnay Vinaigrette.
Three entrées: our godfather had the Québec Duck Breast with Citrus Braised Red Cabbage, Beets, Roasted Pearl Onions, Maitake Mushrooms, Beluga Lentils, Foie Gras Jus, & a Walnut Crumble.
My brother had the Roasted Chicken Breast with Grilled Broccolini, Mushroom Farro, Golden Chanterelles, Spinach, Natural Jus, & Chimichurri.
I had the Beef Short Ribs with Parsnip Purée, Citrus Braised Charred Belgian Endive, Brussel Sprout Leaves, Parsnip Crisps, Gremolata, & a Rich Natural Pan Sauce.
We finished the night with four orders of dessert: two orders of their famous Coconut Cream Pie: Coconut Custard, White Chocolate Shavings, Chantilly Cream, & a Dark Chocolate Sauce.
An order of Chocolate Torte with Dulce de Leche Ice Cream, Caramelized Bananas, Banana Purée, & Chocolate Crémeux.
Finally, my personal favourite: Milk & Honey. Milk Sorbet, Crispy Milk Wafer, Wildflower Honey Mousse, Bee Pollen, Honey Glaze, & Oat Crumble.
Overall, the food and desserts were very well balanced and executed beautifully. Perfect Sear on the Duck, Rich and Tender Short Ribs, velvety smooth and sweet Parsnip Purée, and the desserts were all incredible!
The ambiance was nice, and the view was spectacular. This hidden gem serves up some French classics with modern twists, inviting their customers for a casual fine dining experience to remember. The Michelin Guide has this wonderful restaurant as one of the top French restaurants in Toronto, and rightfully so. 10/10 recommend.
My only criticism was that the service wasn't where it should've been. Our main server seemed quite frantic. Rushing us, not properly highlighting the menu items that we asked about and giving poor descriptions. Not asking us if we have any allergies and overall subpar service. The lady who checked in on us a couple of times was...

I have been there twice. I am impressed by their service. Friendly staff with good sense of humor
We booked ahead using OpenTable app. It was a birthday dinner. Unfortunately they don’t open on Sunday. We booked the night before. I didn’t say anything but wrote it in the OpenTable comment area. Obviously they read about it and arranged a quiet corner with nicer view
The floor plan of the restaurant is somehow awkward at the same time it works for small groups gatherings.
Mocktails are good. We ordered olive before so we tried Hummus and bread. Very tasty. Need to ask the chef if they added a tiny bit of chilly power into hummus. It is great.
I knew that I wanted a seafood dinner. Half lobster salad. You should not miss. My family ordered the scallop for main but I chose the shrimp and crab meat spaghetti. Because the lobster salad was so good, I was expecting prawns instead of cooked shrimps with the spaghetti. I was a bit disappointed but at the same time I was willing to try out the spaghetti without any hesitation. Spaghetti must be house made. It’s very much like the high end Italian restaurant pasta. It was cooked up to the level which is a bit chewy and good texture.
Even though, I did not have much to say about the main. I knew the dessert dish will make up for the whole experience
Yeah right it’s the coconut cream pie. The crust was not soggy because of the cream. The coconut taste was not overpowering. I am not a white chocolate person but it works well with the whole dessert.
It sounds crazy but I think I can eat at least two more.
I recommend this restaurant for every single special occasion you think of. Glad to see the customers were all well dressed. Love the vibe. Just a bit noisy if you have families...
