I have been going to this place with family and friends for many years. There's a love and hate relationship. As people have stated in other reviews, the place is a dive and needs updating. It's pretty old school dining from back in the 80's/90's and it's a great location in the area for a restaurant to be but this spot is literally right in the corner and there's barely any parking in this plaza, especially during prime time hours so you have to maneuver around and drive around until someone leaves. It's very true what they say, the staff is very upfront and very straight forward. They just want you to place an order and get out. They charge 10% service charge for people who are dining in, but the woman does announce it when people step in to dine so there are no surprises. I guess maybe people were leaving without giving tips, so they include that in their pricing now, which wasn't the case before. Something you should be aware of is that they ONLY ACCEPT DEBIT OR CASH but if you spend more than 15$, you'll get 10% off your pick up order (Conditions apply, so check with the fine print on the menu) and also, if you pay by cash, you'll get a certain discount as well. Basically, they do have some deals, if you care to ask about them ;) ..... As for the lady that is always there, she's definitely overwhelmed during the day and she is very frustrated when it seems that people don't understand her or need a little guidance/clarification... So, I can agree that she has a very bad attitude for being front line with customers and if I would change anything about the place, it's that she should understand that repeat customers pay the bills and keep the place open so she technically should have more respect and understanding when customers are in front of her and they are trying to ask questions or trying to order. As for the inside, they have rooms for people who want to have an event there or for larger parties and then they have the general area with booths and tables too. The booths are nice because they have these hanging curtains and it adds ambiance, even though it's outdated décor. There's a button on the wall and you can press it for service.
Lunch is the best time to go because they have a great menu and the price is very reasonable. You're still getting an XL portion of food, compared to other places and the combos come with a spring roll OR a canned drink. You can upgrade steamed rice for egg fried rice and also, you can upgrade to noodles too, but both are a minimal additional charge (Not more than 2$ each upgrade).
Like I mentioned, the portions are generous and worth the money, definitely compared to other places. Here's the part that gets us coming back so many times, the food tastes awesome! The chef back there, knows what he's doing and he does it extremely well. I don't believe he speaks English but he's talented so he generally stays at the back and I rarely see anyone, other than that woman in the front. She's not very friendly to even ask for her name, even though I've seen her so many times...Sadly.
I thought to change up and find a different place, to get this type of food but no matter how high the reviews at other places, NOBODY makes BOMBAY chicken like they do!!! It's spicy but DAMN, it hits the spot! You can actually ask for less spice because everything is fresh to order so they DO accommodate HEAT/SPICE levels, if you tell them you need it a step less. I forgot today, and my mouth felt the fire! lol!!!! Still so tasty and so addicting! Highly recommend that dish, if you don't mind a dry spice on your chicken, instead of a saucy dish. They make tasty egg fried rice and noodles too. Compare other places and see for yourself!
So, overall, this is why I'm rating them a 4. Amazing food and happy to keep coming because of that reason! I haven't found any restaurant in the area that can surpass their cooking style. Everything else about the place is not so great but the quality/quantity of food is perfect! We have tried many of their dishes and you really...
Read moreEvery single time I’ve come here, the dishes haven’t been properly cleaned. I always find myself having to wipe down the plates, bowls, cups, and cutlery with water and napkins before I can eat, not exactly what you want when dining out.
This latest visit was no different in that regard. The restaurant had a weird smell, not like food, like dirty socks. What really surprised me, though, was that they’re now charging an extra 10% to dine in, which they’ve never done before. On top of that, when my family and I walked in, the guy (same person every time, short Asian man with straight hair styled upwards) did not greet us but pointed to our seating while loudly smacking gum and chewing obnoxiously. Definitely not the most professional impression.
This place used to be a lot busier and better staffed, but now it just seems like it’s him running the whole show. Strangely, as soon as we were done eating, even though the curtain around our booth was closed, he showed up immediately with the receipt and fortune cookies. We genuinely wondered if the table ringer was actually a camera, because it felt like he was watching us. It also felt rude he gave the receipt so quick. My plate was still full.
When it came time to pay, he told us they only accept debit or cash. My dad calmly suggested that it would be better to inform customers of that before they order, just a bit of friendly advice. The man, who we assume is the manager or owner since he’s been there for years, got weirdly offended. He told my dad to stop complaining and even admitted he purposely ignored him when it came time to pay. He then started going on about how he’s been there for 10 years... Okay, but we’ve lived Toronto our whole lives. A customer giving you constructive feedback shouldn’t be a reason to take offense.
As we were leaving, things escalated. He followed us outside and kept trying to instigate an argument, even saying he had my dad on camera “if he wants to do something.” Honestly, it was unprofessional, uncomfortable, and completely unnecessary.
We’ve put up with a lot over the years because the food is decent, but after this experience, I don’t think we’ll be back. Clean your dishes, respect your customers, and take feedback without acting like it’s a personal attack. This was my last straw, I gave this location many chances. Sucks that I had...
Read moreVery disappointing quality today! We just ordered spicy garlic chicken with egg fried rice that is very salty.
The hot and sour soup is extremely thick and unusually salty as well.
And lastly i called to tell them about the house fried Manchurian noodles that we asked to be mild which ended up being so spicy I couldn't tolerate the spice level as an adult .... i also paid an extra 2 dollars to add broccoli for my toddler so these were meant for little kids. they said they made them "little spicy". The noodles were bought for our young kids so I asked for mild.. we've been ordering from this place for the last 3 years and have been dining in even before that...we've never returned food here not complained.. the lady who answers the phone and sits upfront needs a lesson or two in basic customer service skills which she clearly lacks... she RUDE !!!
I was very upset this time with this order. they offered to replace the noodles but once we got home (about 15 min from the restaurant) it wouldn't have been possible to get out again with a hungry toddler and 8 yr old on a Friday evening. So I asked if they could offer the replacement noodles on our next order..i said maybe 2 wks from today... but they demanded we come back within 3 days and the they wouldn't replace these noodle but would give only vegei noodles .. then after fighting with this reception/phone order lady on the phone she agreed to extend the free noodle( only with shrimp) offer to be picked up within one week.
Update: later this evening we went back to the restaurant to return the salty and excessively spicy food... the rude abnoxious lady at the front argued and argued the the soup wasn't salty and that we should have asked for non salty... how ridiculous is this lady !!!? We've never had an issue with this soup here we told her and the salt has never been a concern so why would a customer have to say less salty... The cook remade the dishes and was apologetic and understanding and told my husband the there is a new chef in the kitchen presently... the noodles the second time around were still spicy but not excessively as before. This time they were "little spicy " as the rude lady says... THEY WERE STILL NOT MILD AS...
