If I could give a rating of 0, I would.
I recently visited Loveless Cafe for a quick takeout order, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The cafe operates in a self-service style where customers place orders at the bar, which typically doesn’t require tipping. Despite this, one of the servers made a rude comment out loud about us not tipping, which was both unprofessional and unwarranted.
From the moment we walked in, the staff’s attitude was unwelcoming, with a level of snobbery that made the entire visit uncomfortable. We’re used to the vibrant, diverse atmosphere of downtown Toronto and usually love how open and friendly cafes here can be, but this felt the opposite.
As regular patrons of cafes and restaurants, we always tip generously at sit-down establishments. However, we don’t feel tipping should be expected for an informal experience like that, and certainly not in a way that’s openly criticized by staff. It’s disheartening to feel judged over this, especially in an environment where inclusivity and warmth should be at the forefront.
We hope this feedback is taken constructively, as customer service plays a significant role in whether we choose to return to a place. Sadly, based on this experience, we won’t be coming back to Loveless Cafe. It was overall a very uncomfortable experience, in this economy it is truly disappointing to see people behave this way. Working in a restaurant, I understand how frustrating it can be at times to go above and beyond for a table and get no tip but this was incomparable. The server with long black hair and a claw clip (male) only poured our drinks (as it was a cafe and take out style), as well as gave terrible attitude from the very beginning. I don’t understand but this cafe definitely made us feel the loveLESS. Toronto’s tipping culture has become disgusting and the people who are unhappy with their minimum wage jobs have truly become entitled. This is not normal. Please work on...

Honestly just disappointed at the experience in this establishment. Server was a total prick. Told me they were going to short change me on my portions because I did not tip. I paid by card and had change in my pocket I was going to add to the tip jar. Before I had the chance, the server couldn’t hold back on the snarky, entitled comments. If I ever looked towards the counter while sitting, the server would just be staring at me. On the way out, they made sure to mention the tipping incident again.
Glad I randomly stumbled across this place and it’s not somewhere I depend on for a good time on a daily or weekly basis. Feel bad for those that do. First and last time. Would not...
Read moreWhile the layout and overall atmosphere of this place is nice. The service is just downright awful. Last night a couple of us went to check this place out, they don’t do table service and the bar where your expected to order is crammed full of seating that’s usually packed and it’s impossible to get the server to notice your trying to order as she’s too busy doing shots with regulars. The food menu is catered towards vegetarians and vegans and isn’t the best for evening drinks, lastly we went for a smoke came back inside and all our drinks were removed from our table. Literally they weren’t even half empty. You can’t expect someone to pay full price for a beverage they didn’t even get to enjoy or finish. Wouldn’t recommend this...
