The first time I came here for coffee, I adored it! Since then, it hasn't lived up to my first rosy experience. That initial visit, I got a cappuccino to go and it was beautifully made with great foam and flavour. When I dine in, it's less good. Often more bitter, watery, and with latte art type foam that isn't as dense or smooth. Also, it seems the barista has changed, maybe? There is one guy who is friendly and makes a better cup of coffee. There is another one who seems to always be having a bad day, and is abrupt and almost rude. He also does not make as good a cappuccino. I felt as if I was bothering him by placing an order. The biggest problem that has turned me off though is the crowds of single people on laptops taking up so many tables, including tables for 4. Toronto in general seems to have an issue with campers like this and I experience it at so many cafes. I do understand having a nice coffee while working, I do. But spending 2 hours with one coffee that was finished long ago? Come on. Everyone seems to treat all cosy Toronto cafes like Starbucks. Cafes here seem very reluctant to enforce a time limit or no laptop policy (during busy hours). It's a shame. I understand some WFH and nomad people may get irritated by such policies, but surely allowing more turnover of tables would be a positive business decision? It prevents other people who just want to sit and enjoy their coffee fresh from having the opportunity. Nothing equals a fresh, hot coffee in a mug, especially in a warm, interesting space that is so inviting and meant to be enjoyed. There have been times I've come into The Only to enjoy a brew only to see every table (and it's a big place!) taken up by campers. I just leave and don't even get takeaway. The area on this part of Danforth is very limited for good cafes like this, and it's too bad it seems to prioritize laptop users over coffee drinkers.

I love this place soooo much. so many great memories, and good times there. hanging out with friends, dates, or just by myself. today I visited the first time after pandemic, and I was delighted to discover that the cafe acquired some extra space - so now there are two rooms for the cafe part and one for the bar (which stays open later, and has an impressive selection of beers and other drinks). the decor is super cool, unique and original art: posters, pictures and paintings on the walls (although I wish there were less portraits of Che Guevara, I am not the biggest fan of the Butcher of Havana, but oh well, obviously the person in charge of this joint is). many choices of non alcoholic beverages: impressive espresso bar menu plus cold beverages. and there are so many pastries - sweet and savoury - and cookies to choose from. I love the atmosphere there - very chill - people who come with groups of friends, couples, or just people sitting by themselves with laptops (wi-fi available for guests) or books. an eclectic mixture of furniture which effortlessly looks perfectly together. there is a patio in the back (most likely closed for winter, but awesome to check during the warmer months). plenty of washrooms in the basement level (not accessible - only by stairs) with some interesting art inside as well, plus some wisdom left by current and past guests. I don't drive so I am not sure about parking options, but it is just steps of Donlands subway station. totally worth a visit. this place is a legend.

Love this spot. I truly hope this characteristic dive never fades out. The spacious back patio is one of the best in the east end if not the city itself with heaters during cold weather. Micro beer/ciders on tap for days. If it's not tapped it's bottled. Liquid ales you won't find elsewhere. When at The Only you may feel like you've warped somewhere else altogether with it's dim lit ambience, lit candles, chill vibes, good tunes... it's influence here is a result of being a backpacker's hostel location also with rooms available upstairs. This being the case, there's always a free-spirited speak easy environment on hand. Added bonus for the choose-5-brews for 10 bucks! That's 5 sample size drinks on tap on the cheap good for mixing it up. For me, The Only Cafe equals a given good time.

YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF

Because I'm the one who can't measure? I can't tell the difference between rubbing alcohol and grey goose and I should order "next time"?

No Crown? No Jack? Vodka is readily available at your nearest pharmacy for a fifth of the price.

Beer tastes like its stale and advertised like its organic and healthy. Throwing up your beer helps me lose weight!

People here can't tell the difference between a Heineken and a Guinness and even asking them "where the ** do I order a Heineken?" Gets you a snobby teenage hostess who claims her personal blog recommends "kewl" bars and even blogs about the Iraq War. Real liberal dudes! Not only did I get ripped off they even lied to my face like no one even noticed.

If I wanted cheap beer that was priced on the label I would go to the 7-11 down the street.

The crowd and barkeeps are full of total *holes who are so defensive about the quality of their money that they forgot they were getting ripped off and even reminding them creates this personal hostility and resentment.

None of the beer I tried here was even as described and people claim this is one of the best places in Toronto.

The cup size is where I got screwed twice and everyone ignores me.

I understand it's "trendy" to try beer that no one drinks but for the price you can get much much better refreshingly filling beer.

"What kind of beer would you drink with a steak?" Rather than "this is locally brewed and made with organic bs so when you throw it up you're still sober! Sorry you could hold your own hair! That'll be 10 bucks!"

People here joke like I'm an act and take my jokes seriously.

You could probably bang the teenager who can't afford any beer and keeps following you like you owe her something or meet people who need to lie about...

I strongly recommend you not to go here.On February 4th, when I was walking in front of this cafe and crossing the road, I collided with an e-bike coming from a distance at very high speed. The e-bike was coming so fast that I saw it coming at the moment of impact. My lip burst during this incident and was cut from the inside. I called an ambulance to the scene. When I had my lip checked in the ambulance, the man riding the e-bike fled the scene. Later, I spoke to the cafe management and wrote to the Facebook address of general manager Susan Harris. They did not respond at all and the camera footage was not given to me. Let me complain. If there is a fight inside the cafe in the morning while you are there, they will not even give you the footage of the incident. First of all, think about your safety.

UPDATE :

Hahahaa, it is already clear from your details how you are slandering. I politely told your employee how many times you called him, as normal. I am a person with authority, my manners would not allow me to shout and scream. It seems very disgusting for you to defend yourself like this.

Helping is something that comes from humanity. When I go on the road and see someone stuck in the snow or on the ground, I help them. Why? Because it is humanity and I think it is related to conscience for everyone to do something like this. Come on, don't you know which Toronto we live in? The Toronto Police Department, who made me wait on the line for 2 hours, listened and sent me on my way, but they did not help me at all. That's why I wanted the camera footage so that I could officially file...
