For the last 20+ years or so, Roti Hut was one of my favourite roti shops in Scarborough. Anytime I'd pass by, I'd buy a minimum of 2 or 3 wrapped rotis at a time.

A few days ago, a few of my friends were in the area and craving roti so I naturally recommended Roti Hut. To my surprise, I later received a call telling me how upset they were with my recommendation due to the amount of filling they got.

As a long time advocate of Roti Hut, I didn't want to believe it so I decided to drive out to Scarborough just to find out for myself. As part of my order, I bought a boneless goat, boneless chicken as well as pumpkin/spinach roti - each to be divided in half and observed.

When I ate the boneless goat roti, I was disappointed because I didn't feel like I got enough filling. The filling to wrap ratio felt abnormal to what I was used to. However, playing devil's advocate, I didn't want to place judgement and left it up to chance.

Later, when I cut into the boneless chicken roti, I was equally disappointed - mostly skin with very little filling. Completely upset, I decided to chalk it up to chance (once again) and keep it moving.

Finally, when I got to my Pumpkin/Spinach roti and cut it in half, I lost my sh!t. It seemed almost as if toast would receive more butter. In width, it was barely the size of a toonie. Considering this was a veggie option that could be considered "less costly" than its meat counterparts, I felt nothing but cheated. I couldn't believe how little filling I got. In that very moment, I decided to post this review. 3x in a row was just too much.

While I regret not taking pictures of the chicken and goat roti, I decided to take one of the Pumpkin/Spinach roti to prove I am not exaggerating. For reference, I've attached it to this review so you can see for yourself.

In conclusion, I will admit that the roti's still tasted very good. However, based on this experience, I no longer see the value in choosing them over anywhere else if this has become the consistent experience for the price paid.

It hurts me to say this but I doubt I'll ever go back...

I am not usually a person to take the initiative to write a review, unless requested to do so. I am writing one today because of the lack of customer care in this incident. I have been a very loyal customer for over 20 years. This is the only establishment that i buy my roti from. Even as i moved to the west end, south Etobicoke, i still make the trip east if i am feeling for a Roti. This evening i attended around 745pm and ordered my usual Bone in chicken roti. I prefer the dark meat, hence the bone in, as that is how it is served. After leaving and eating the roti in my vehicle, I took a few bite and it was tasty as always. As i lifted a piece of the chicken i saw that is was very bloody and uncooked to my dismay. I returned to Roti hut (took pictures of the roti) and advised the order taker/cashier. I handed her my uneaten portion with the bloody chicken. She took it to the back and spoke with the owner/cook. The employèe came back and stated, 'SHE SAID THESE THINGS HAPPEN DO YOU WANT ANOTHER ONE OR A REFUND? NO APOLOGIES. What do you mean these things happen? Not in an restaurant, a customer doesn't need to hear that. The owner didn't even make the effort to speak to me. Next i heard the owner asking the employee, ' What does she want' , still making no effort to speak to me directly. It is a small place so it was not a trek to poke her head out andspeak to me directly. I had no arguement, other than handing her the roti, i said nothing further. For that reason, I requested a refund, left the establishment and decided to write a review. It will be a while before i return to Roti Hut or recommend it again. Serving undercooked food and offering the paying customer no sense of care was very disappointing. I have pictures to verify...

Still my favourite roti place! They open at 11:00a.m. on Sundays now! On this visit, my group ordered 5 rotis. The roti skins were soft and delicious as usual. The jerk chicken roti was so tender, juicy and flavourful. The shrimp roti was absolutely loaded with shrimp. The potato channa rotis were full of flavour. We got extra gravy for the shrimp roti and boneless curry chicken rotis and they came through 100%. The store made peanut punch is a delicious dessert in a cup! Total for 5 rotis and 2 peanut punch drinks was just over $80...not really cheap, but not bad for the excellent quality. The only 2 small knocks on this visit were that they were out of the Tropical Rhythm Ginger Sorrel drinks and they don't give hot sauce with takeout any more. The drinks was no problem, but their hot sauce is delicious and really complimented the rotis well in the past. I have a jar at home, but I was taking this elsewhere on this visit and would really have liked some of their delicious hot sauce. Overall, the food was delicious and prepared quickly, the staff was super friendly and efficient. Even after decades, I'm still loving The Roti Hut, but pleeease bring back your delicious (and famous!) hot sauce with your takeout orders! 😉

My very first Roti was back in 1983, and yes, it was from the Roti Hut. It has been at least 30 years since I have been to the Roti Hut, to be honest, like many restaurants. I thought they closed years ago. Today I happen to be the area working on a project, and had not eaten in hours, the traffic was terrible, so I turned into Pitfield hoping to avoid traffic and find a a convenience store, when I spotted the Roti Hut! It was still in the same spot. It was bigger, and it had been rebranded, but when I was hit by the lovely sents of spices, I thought, could it still be as good 40 years later? Can I tell you that it might be bigger it might be shinier, but the one thing that did change was the amazing taste of their Roti!!! In a world where little stays the same, it was amazing to eat something that was super tasty the first time and still super tasty now. It was such a nostalgic experience. If you love Roti....go to the Roti Hut, you will not regret it. I ordered my Roti spicy with boneless chicken and channel with extra gravy.....it was unforgettable the first time, and it is unforgettable 40 years later. There are not a lot of restaurants that have this kind of consistency after all these years!!!!!
