Welcome to my noodle nirvana, where slurping is not only allowed but encouraged! A few days ago, I went to the steamy streets of broth heaven, also known as the Self Ramen Bar (233 C College St, Toronto, ON, M5T 1R4). Spoiler alert: I survived the chopstick chaos, but did the ramen reign supreme or was it just a soupy saga? Let’s spill the soy sauce and find out!
I started out the meal with a delicious jjangjanmyeon that combined the sweet and savoury flavours of black bean noodle soup to create an entree masterpiece. Paired with a side of tteokbokki, a spicy rice cake extravaganza topped with fish skin and a generous cheese drizzle, turning every bite into a flavor fiesta. My taste buds went on a joyride through Seoul and back, made only better with the drinks ordered. The milkis, a fizzy fusion of creamy milk and refreshing soda, along with the sweet Dongwoon Coolpis Peach Sparkling Drink washed the delicious meal down with gusto, leaving me with a contented sigh and a longing for seconds.
Should you find yourself in Toronto's College Street looking for halal or vegetarian options, then a customizable self-serve ramen eatery is the way to go - The Self Ramen Bar is here to meet all of your South East Asian food cravings regardless of your dietary preferences. Highly recommended!

Read moreThe concept for this place is bizarre. You choose from a range of cup noodles, pick your toppings and then use their cooking stations (which is basically just a fancy kettle) at the back to cook the noodles.
If you've visited Korea or Japan, cooking your own cup noodles is pretty common in convenience stores and it's a free service. To mark up prices by 2-3x from H-Mart/Galleria or even T&T just a few blocks away is just ludicrous.
While they have more options compared to the typical selection you see and you can add toppings, there is no reason to come here unless you're dying to eat a specific type of cup noodles you can't find anywhere else in Toronto.
I'm guessing their target demographic is busy students from the nearby campus who don't have much time to sit down and eat, but come on. It shouldn't be that hard to boil water at home!
I will give it an additional star for the helpful staff who were around to help out, though. Regardless, this seems like a novelty concept store that will be hard to sustain itself once the...
Read moreThis spot is amazing for anyone at the DT UofT location for a quick and easy bite that that will fill you up!
Stopped by this place after seeing it trend in social media and upon arriving got a warm welcome from owner Jason. He explained the menu options and the 2 ramen + rice cake combo, which is what we went for.
You can either order on the vending machine, which will allow you to select your ramen and drinks as well. Jason knew we were newer to the experience and provided free pickled raddish as we didn't order enough. He also assisted in making the order for us and showing us how to use the ramen/ricecake making machine (this location is usually self-serve, but staff is more than happy to help).
The machine cooks the ramen perfectly, not too hard, not too soft with the right amount of water! Felt like I was in Korea/kdrama.
This is a must try for any students on a budget or a nice quick bite spot for a couple (the 2 ramen + ricecake is filling for a quick bite).
Thank you, Jason, for such an amazing experience, and we will...
