I had a career in food and worked in French pastry, chocolate, etc. I rarely am impressed by cakes in Toronto. There is too much of a sweet tooth here or else cakes that are trying to be over the top. What Thobors does is more refined. This way the high quality ingredients shine through.
I want to address the 1 star reviews and complaints here. In my experience even the very best bakeries in Toronto are still stuck with the horrible climate in our city. Our humidity is quite ridiculously high during the summer, sometimes as high as 80 RH. In these conditions it IS NOT POSSIBLE to serve the best quality of pastry. Even with a high quality air conditioner you are still going to have several days a year where pastries will almost instantly seem stale. In hospitality we pride ourselves on serving the best but sometimes some compromise is necessary because otherwise you would have to not sell any pastries and that would be even worse. Reheating briefly isn’t that big of an ordeal. Instead of being spoiled and giving 1 star to a very well run bakery which demonstrates a range of talents, try and be more understanding. Bakers are up every day baking early in the morning for little reward. To insult a craftsperson like this is incredibly rude and shows a...
Read moreI came to this bakery to grab a coffee with a friend and go. Overall, the bakery was ok, but a few things irked me. I was greeted with a “Hi, how are you?” and asked to place my order. I placed my order and received it, but that was when I was faced with staff members who didn’t seem to know the names of the products, what to call the POS device and were generally confused. It took a lot of back and forth to figure out what they were trying to tell me. I was also initially told I would get to decide how much milk I wanted and how much sugar, but then ended up just getting a cup with an unknown amount of milk or sugar. The pastry I ordered, which was a croissant with chocolate and almonds, which sounds very appetizing, was quite dry and seemed a bit stale.
I would also add there are no healthy choices here. The ingredients are undisclosed, so beware. It’s a little disappointing that cooking with massive amounts of refined white flour, and white sugar, is considered to be good quality. But this is a general trend in the city, I give extra credit to those businesses that try to buck this...
Read moreI've passed by this bakery/cafe many times and had a small windows of time to pass so I stopped in for a coffee. Full disclosure: I didn't eat or buy anything. From looks alone, nothing intrigued me. The croissants looked under proofed; not like authentic croissants. The "croque" sandwiches were precooked. But this is just an observation.
So I ordered a cafe au lait which soy milk. Unbeknownst to me, the cafe was closing in 15 minutes. The person behind the counter was the only one serving customers and making beverages. It took her 15 minutes somehow to make 1 coffee (which was lousy I might add) only to inform me that I had 2 minutes to drink it. Had it been warmer weather, it would have been mildly a annoying. Faced with drinking a pricy and sub par (almost $8) coffee made with Costco brand soy milk) in -15 degree temps, I was frankly Po'd.
I am not a Karen nor a coffee snob. I just dislike the lack of caring coupled with the desire for my money. I guess in this neighbourhood, money flows and...
