Tiny Cafe is one of my regular spots and my friend Jangchuo (or George) Dorjee who owns TIny Cafe has lived in Parkdale for over 20 years. I always leave with more momos that my tummy allows, but ah well, they're that good. If you’re not familiar with momos, they are delicious Tibetan dumplings and one of my comfort foods. I was first introduced to Tiny Cafe as part of a Momo Crawl fundraiser organized by Students For A Free Tibet (SFT) not long after it first opened in 2018. Little Tibet as the area is known, is home to over two thirds of Canada’s Tibetan population.
Tiny Cafe is appropriately named, as it occupies a super small storefront at 10 Macdonell Ave, but don’t let that deter you. Janchuo mentioned that he learned to make momos from watching his mom and aunt do it for years. Making momos at my home was always a family affair" - and he really enjoyed the laughter and poking fun at each other's momos.
Tiny Cafe’s momos are beautiful bundles of flavourful deliciousness. They make everything from scratch and by hand daily, including the wrappers. You can choose between veggie, vegan, beef, chicken, pork or even an assortment of momos. The wrappers of the pork momos are yellow thanks to turmeric, the chicken wrappers are orange thanks to paprika and the beef wrappers are made with white wheat flour. The vegan momos are distinctive due to their pleated shape, while the veggie momo has parsley flakes in the wrapper.
When you fall in love with them (like I have), you might want to consider a bulk bag of 50 frozen uncooked momos for cooking at home. Not only are the momos great but their from scratch chili sauce also has me coming back regularly. You can even buy it in jars to use at home for your everyday chili sauce needs. Jangchuo makes the fiery sauce using a combination of Sri Lankan and Indian chilis from local Parkdale convenience stores.
You also need to try their Butter tea, a traditional Tibetan tea that’s unlike any tea I’ve had before. It’s a little salty, smooth and incredibly warming, especially on...
Read moreWe are pleased to announce Tiny Cafe as the winner of the 2021 Ayala Momocrawl award for best momo. With fiece compeition from other local momo artists, Tiny Cafe proved its mettle producing the finest, delicitable momo for the 7 judges to indulge in.
The momos had an excellent dough to filling ratio which created the perfect gap depth between the dough and filling. The vegeterian momo had a beautifully done tofu filling which provided a very unqiue flavour compared to its competitors. However the real star of the show was the beef momo. Taking advantage of the expertly created gap depth the beef broth filled the momo and created an explosion of flavour on the first bite. The flavour ride did not end there though because Tiny Cafe brought the beef baby. Easily the best and highest quality beef in the competition
Just like how Jordan needed Pippen, these momo are not complete without their sidekick sauces. Wonderfully hot and full of flavour the sauce compliments the momo proving that yes you can improve perfection.
It was a tough compeitition but as they say the cream rises to the top and Tiny Cafe has proven to be worthy of the titile of...
Read moreThe worst experience in Toronto! I went there by driving 40 mins to order food. I tried calling first and no one picked so I drove all the way to order food since the reviews were great. Oh man … i was wrong… I ordered my food and asked for the meat platter and veggies platter. She gave me mized up veggie and meat but only half of it. When i asked her about the remaining she couldnt explain and kept talking in her language. The guy after me came and started talking to her in their language trying to explain her what from the menu and i wanted. Simply wanted a menu item number 7 & 9. I stood there and the lady served the person after me. She doesnt even know her own menu. She then came back with some more momos but not the ones i wanted. When I confronted her about it she took the food away from me and told me she was not going to serve me. I read in some of the previous reviews that management changed but this was next level failure to serve your customers! Never coming back or...
