Gotta say, I wasn't expecting this as I've always had a great experience at the Fort. Hit the bar on a Saturday late afternoon for a beer and quick bite. Place was pretty busy but the bar was empty. Found a seat and waited patiently for service, which wasn't too long, probably 10-12mins. Server was obviously busy a d place may have been understaffed as everyone was rushing around. Ordered a lager (turned out to be the house lager) and then a beef burger from the menu once it had arrived. Upgraded to add bacon and then chose salad instead of fries (ceasar)... as the server was backing her way back to the kitchen still taking my order. The food arrived probably over 20mins later. No worries, hungry and thirsty, so all good. Checking the open burger I was surprised to find the pattie solid-looking. It was obviously processed, which I guess would be fine but this pattie was round with hard flat edges like it had been cut from Mince using a ring. Perfectly round and edged like a coin. OK so it depends on what it tastes like I guess? One Bute had me questioning if it was a Beyond meat pattie... texture was rubbery and greasy, flavour was mild but it tasted sort of like beef? anyway iy was waaaaay too overly salted though, needed a sip of beer every bite just to get it down. This was obviously a pre-frozen packaged pattie of some description. So, onto the salad, which consisted literally of yellow and white chopped Romain Lettuce (seemed to be all the bits closer to the stalk), some croutons and the dressing on the side. For a Cesar salad it was very poor, but the clincher was that there was no room to mix the dressing into the salad. So the experience was forking chunks into the dressing for each bite for any flavor.
Bill including a $5 tip (really wasn't that great service TBH), came to $42. I was charged $2 for bacon....and $2 to 'upgrade' to Cesar salad? For one 'house' beer, a simple beef burger for $23 where you had pay an extra $2 for anything (it didn't even come with cheese, seriously), and salad for the side... it all seemed excessively expensive for very mediocre food and experience.
If this is the new standard for the pub, it'll be my last time there for sure. It looks nice from the outside etc, but that only goes so far with food and experience of this caliber.
COMPARISON: Steamworks brewpub has a food truck purpose built into the brewery. $23 for a delicious, juicy real beef burger with bacon and cheese, fries (or salad) plus a beer ($1 extra for a pint size)... foor ready in 10mins. There's zero...
Read moreWe were vacationing in the Metro Vancouver area and visited The Fort pub for lunch on August 4/23. The food was average and so was the service. We ate on the patio and my visa went through at 2:37pm. The name of the server was Jacqueline. As I paid up, I was leaving a 15% tip and the waitress complained that I was leaving a poor tip at 10%. I said no, it was 15%. She went on to complain that she pays half of her tip to the kitchen and that 15% wasn't enough tip for her. She was going on about my poor tip and I just shut her out while I using the debit machine. We were shocked that this waitress was so brazenly entitled. Normally, I would cancel the tip and give $0 for such a rude server. Had I not been with family, I would've asked for a manager. But we're on vacation and were heading out, so I left it. Thankfully, I won't ever visit this pub again. But I have definitely told my friends and family who live in the area to avoid this pub at all costs! The fact that their staff feel it's ok to tell me how much they expect me to tip them is out of line. Interestingly, the next day we received 5/5 service at Denny's at 6am. You'd think we were eating in a fine dining restaurant from the service we received!
Edit: I spoke with the manager who made it right... 100%. The manager agreed that how the server behaved was unacceptable and I will be giving this pub another try next time I am in town. This was a one-off experience rather than what I would normally experience at this pub.
EDIT 2: I went back at Christmas and the food and service was outstanding. My steak was cooked perfectly. I raised my stars for this review to reflect that (4.5 stars). Apparently the rude server no longer works there, so it won't be an issue next time I visit. Now, I would recommend this pub and would love to visit it again the next time I come to...
Read moreAlrighty where do we begin. I am not one to write a review let me start there and as someone who works in the industry I would only ever leave positive reviews as I know how it affects the business but I thought this deserved to be shared. My partner recently visited Fort Pub for a birthday. He doesn't drink for personal reasons and has a line he uses almost everywhere that gets the server laughing saying he'll have a VIRGIN rum and coke. His server however didn't find it funny nor get the joke and delivered him a real rum and coke. And while you might say why didn't he clarify after making the joke well because she didn't ID him (he 100% looks under 20 let alone 30 so that right there is a HUGE red flag) so he thought that because he didn't get ID'd that she understood. He wasn’t upset about the drink but her attitude she gave him …. she came back with the coke and rudely said don't ever joke about that again.
Service was sub par as you can tell. He ordered a pizza and had to get it taken to go because it took so long. Then when it came to the bill strictly because of this attitude he didn't tip - which he always does but in this case he was so angry he didn't. Fair enough. The server then looks at the receipt sees he didn’t tip and goes "oh ya well you're over 6 people so you have to tip 18% you better leave cash" ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
I am all for having a gratuity on a larger group when it's disclosed to the guest but you do not handle it like this at all. It was just flat out rude and sneaky the boys were sitting at two different tables and came at different times so they weren’t even all together. An 18% gratuity should be on the bill prior to the bills being handed out and should be disclosed to the guest before they pay not after.
Ashley if you’re reading this I hope that $5 made a big impact...
