Sadly, change isn't always good. If you've been here before and liked it, you may be disappointed. Or you may like it. It's been a while since we were here due to the pandemic, but we thought we would get some takeout when we came across a decent coupon deal for 50% off one build-your-own pizza. Considering there were 4 of us, it wasn't a major deal but it got us thinking about them again. Walked in and we realized the menu was completely different. Not a bad thing, but we inquired about the old "build your own" and one of the guys said "we encourage you to order from the menu". Then I noticed the "Build your own" for $17 on the menu. I asked them if that meant we couldn't order that now. Odd, but they looked busy so I thought they might have been trying to save themselves some time. When I showed them our coupon, we were dismissed with "sorry but that was old ownership and they haven't taken it down so we're not accepting it". So change the name. And read the crowd. How many ownership changes have they had? But I wanted to be understanding as it was becoming clear the changes were probably needed. I wasn't really sure how the old place could make money at $11 or whatever it was for unlimited toppings. But $17 for a broad 'build your own' did seem like a jump for an 8" thin crust pizza, with less selection. And the old way of having fun by selecting what you felt like, just by looking and pointing was gone We ordered, gave them a tip, and were told 15 mins. Again, not the same, as the old place had those in the oven as soon as you chose your last topping and ready after a few mins in those high powered ovens. Ok, again, maybe they were busy and it was only 15 mins, so no problem. After almost 30 mins later, we received our pizzas. Online ordering these days is a blessing and curse. But don't you love it when walk-in customers take a backseat? We did get an honest apology for the wait, but I think we would have just preferred an update. Nothing like watching a kettle boil to pass the time. A simple "hey sorry about the delay but your pies are just getting into the oven now and should be up right away". I get that people are busy, stressed, and trying to do the best they can, but I think we all need to work on the communication skills. The pizza was ok. Still the good fresh thin crust they were known for before. But somewhat bland. And I'm not sure why we needed a bag of fresh arugula dumped on the Chicken Alfredo. Funny I'm sort of complaining about getting more than we expected! Maybe I didn't get the memo about new arugula craze. :-) I think our old experience just set us up to be less than impressed. Those changes may have been needed for the new owners to make things work, but it simply wasn't as much fun without the custom options we enjoyed. I might give them a chance to change our minds once this whole pandemic is over. Until then, just read the recent reviews. I think they will appeal to new customers, and maybe by choice, their old market isn't who they want. Good luck...
Read moreSuper sad to write this review after tonight’s experience at Mad Italian. My Sister her boyfriend and I have been coming to Mad Italian for the last 3 years. It was once an amazing local pizza spot with great atmosphere and staff. Although, over our last few visits the experience has gotten to the point of no return.
Generally the consistency has gone down considerably, very hit or miss over the past few visits with service no where close to what it has been in the past.
Tonight - We arrived at 9:20PM and were greeted promptly by a young lady whose name I am unaware of. Where she informed us last call was at 10:00PM for food which we said wasn’t an issue.
Given that she gave notice of the last call for food we promptly ordered our food and drinks: 2 jalapeños, 1 Nutty Honey and a Caesar Salad. She first listened to our order then apologized and said she needed to grab a note pad. We restated to her the order with the notepad. We got our food right after 10:00PM she brought two pizzas: 1 Jalapeño and 1 Nutty Honey, she then informed me that they did not have lettuce for the Caesar Salad which we said wasn’t an issue. Although as an appetizer I would have assumed we would have been informed earlier to offer an alternative. We then waited approximately 10 mins to ask about the status of the remaining pizza. Her response was to shrug her arms and ask “There was a second pizza?” She then apologized and informed us she would have offered to make us another pizza if it wasn’t after last call and the ovens hadn’t just been turned off.
We decided to not press the issue as mistakes happen. Although, as we waited to finish our drinks at 10:37 we watched one of the staff place a pizza into the oven directly behind us. We were shocked, after we had just been refused a pizza for one of our guests that had not received his food.
We did inform her that it probably isn’t the best idea to refuse food to paying guests after your mistake and then proceed to make a pizza for staff. She said she’d “let her kitchen know”.
As I was paying for my portion of the meal I noticed I was still being charged for the Caesar Salad. I reminded her that it needed to be removed which she then told me she couldn’t remove because the system is “funky” and that she would give me cash back to cover the difference.
I refused and told her that I would not pay for it as I knew that the system could remove items. She then said it required a manager code, which I said she should get then. She then walked away and returned and removed the item from my bill.
Probably the worst restaurant experience I have had in a long time, from what was previously one of my go to...
Read moreGreat night at Mad Italian.
The owner of the place sitted with me at the bar and we had a very nice talk, almost like we were old friends
I give him a few ideas for creative pizza recipe and he went on to make one of the recipe and we tried it. He took my ideas and he added his personal touch. This pizza tasted amazing! (All their prizza are very good)
The Friday crowd in that place are mostly composed of the regular customers, everyone kind of recognize eachother. It creates that local place vibe where regular and new customer meet and interact.
The live music performances are composed of one or two people, piano man style. They are just a few feets away from pretty much everyone in the place. That makes the best live music experience because they are interacting so much with the crowd on a personal basis.
Not long after the performer finished, the place emptied up. I was the only customer left in the place, sitting at the bar. All of a sudden I heard that incredibly beautiful voice singing just behind my head. I turned around and saw that shy teens girls (probably 16y old) cleaning the tables. Long story short, after me complementing her about her singing, she ended up sitting at the piano and basically offerings me a private performance.
The most beautiful part of the night was when the place start to filled up again, with people carrying grocery bags or take out from other restaurants. People were coming in because they were attracted by the incredibly, amazing voice of that little girl that had overcome her shyness and basically been performing like a pro.
Definitely "a feel good" kind of night. I went out just by myself but didn't felt...
