The service started off decently. The waitress politely asked for our orders and informed us that the claypot rice takes time to prepare, so we should order it as soon as possible. However, things took a turn for the worse when the soup, which was supposed to be included with the claypot rice according to the menu, only arrived after I specifically asked for it. Earlier, the waitress had asked if we wanted drinks, to which I said no. Strangely, she seemed to think that "drinks" and "soup" were the same thing, which was very confusing.
The situation worsened when it was time to pay. The waitress suddenly informed us that we could only use debit cards since each of us had spent less than $20. This policy was not mentioned anywhere in the restaurant. After we paid, she persistently asked me and one of my friends to leave her a cash tip, even though we had decided not to tip her. When another friend asked if tipping was mandatory, the waitress rudely responded, "I thought you guys just came from mainland China, so you don't know how the tipping culture works here." This comment was offensive and unprofessional. Tipping is a choice, and we felt her service did not warrant one.
To make matters worse, we overheard her recounting the no-tipping situation to her boss and coworkers, though they didn’t seem to react. What did she expect them to do? Her behavior made our dining experience a nightmare.
As for the food, the claypot rice was mediocre at best—nothing special. The portion was smaller than expected, and the flavor was bland unless I added a generous amount of soy sauce. On a positive note, the claypot rice arrived within 15–20 minutes, which was acceptable given the preparation time.
In conclusion, the poor service and average food mean my friends and I will never return to this restaurant. Unless it’s your absolute last resort, I strongly advise against...
Read moreSince I have moved to Kerrisdale, I have been thinking of trying this Rice Pot House. I met my old friend for lunch so I suggested to go to this place and try their Claypot Rice. It is a nice small restaurant on the W41 Avenue with the big red logo so it is easy to spot this place. They have both indoor and outdoor dining area.
Before I came here I read some reviews about their clay pot rice and all are quite positive, especially the C9: Chicken, dried mushrooms and sausage clay pot rice. So I gave it a try. When I entered the restaurant I was warmly welcomed by the servers and they also recommended me to try this famous clay pot rice. It also came with a bowl of Chinese soup. My friend picked the minced pork cake clay pot rice.
Without waiting for long the clay pot rice we’re ready and I could hear the sizzling sound when I added in the light and sweet soy sauce. This sound made me recalled the the clay pot rice I had in Hong Kong a long time ago. Having a clay pot rice in a cold day is definitely awesome experience.
The chicken meat is soft without overcooked. It smelled good with the sausage and slides mushroom. The crispy rice on the bottom was fantastically the same as I had before. It is authentic and wonderful!
The one ordered by my friend was also great and we finished the rice without any left over.
For the foods and service, definitely 5 stars and I will try the other clay pot rice on the...
Read moreCame here with a friend of mines with kids to try out the claypot rice. We ordered 2 special claypot rice and deep fried chicken nuggets with rice. We waited a while for tea and water, also for the waitress to take our order. The waitress tried to upsell this special egg that is popular to add on to the claypot rice. Which we ordered it since it's "popular". When the food finally came after 30 mins. I looked at the egg, it was stuffed with some mince meat but cut in half to place into each of the pots. The chicken nugget rice came and it was super bland and also I never in my life saw this dish came with jalapenos. The waitress knew this dish is for the kids, why would they add jalapeno in it? The claypot rice was also bland and I had to add a ton of soya sauce in it. The rib meat was mostly little meat with lots of bone. So I felt they were giving us cheap meat to fill the pot. After we finished the meal the bill came to $67. The add on egg was 3.50 for half an egg. That's $7 for the one whole egg. Highway robbery!!! I will never go back to this restaurant. Food is bland and not...
