I haven't been to Ramen Danbo on Robson Street in Downtown Vancouver for a few years. I was happy to hear that Ramen Danbo opened new locations in Kitsilano and Kerrisdale neighborhoods. I came to try Ramen Danbo Kerrisdale to see if their famous flavourful ramen still remains the top spot.
I was very lucky to find a parking spot direction front of Ramen Danbo on West 41st Avenue in Kerrisdale. This stretch of West 41st can get busy, but street parking is often available if one is patient to search the area. We were immediately greeted with a line of a few people waiting to get inside. The line did move along steadily, a sign of Ramen Danbo's very efficient service.
We marked down our menu selection while waiting in line. By the time we were directed to our table, a wait staff was ready with 2 glasses of water and ready to take our order. We ordered their Classic Ramen with eggs and seaweed. We also opted for the richer flavour and thicker broth. For most people, their standard broth is equally good. Our bowls of delicious ramen arrived in under 5 minutes cooked to perfection at just the right texture and plenty of flavour. I was so hungry I ordered the "Kaemada" extra noodles to finish my entire bowl of yummy broth.
The wait staff at Ramen Danbo worked with incredible efficiency and great attention. My spouse wanted a glass of hot water and they brought us one right away. Watching them work was good enough entertainment as was watching the other people slurp their bowl of delicious ramen.
With the convenient location of Ramen Danbo Kerrisdale, we are sure to return sooner than fighting the Downtown Vancouver traffic to get to Ramen...
Read moreI’ve been a regular customer at Ramen Danbo since 2022, and I keep going back because their vegan ramen options are some of the best I’ve had. The flavors are rich, comforting, and keep me coming back, which says a lot given how many ramen spots are around.
That said, my experiences with service have been hit or miss. There have been mix-ups with orders — for example, I once ordered the Negi-Goma ramen but was served Miso instead. When I pointed it out, I was initially told it was my mistake before it was acknowledged and corrected. While I did eventually get the right dish, a simple apology would have gone a long way, especially since many restaurants would waive the charge in such cases.
For takeout, portioning of accompaniments is often lacking — like the gyoza dipping sauce, which is barely enough for one or two pieces, not the whole order. On another occasion, I requested a little extra sesame for my baby and was told it would be an additional charge. I don’t mind paying extra, but the rigidity in small requests does stand out.
Most recently, my takeout Negi-Goma ramen was missing the main sesame ingredient altogether, which was really disappointing since I couldn’t go back just for that.
Overall, while the food (especially the vegan ramen) keeps me coming back, the service and consistency feel closer to a fast-food experience than a sit-down restaurant. I really hope Ramen Danbo can improve on the customer service side and show more care for...
Read moreThis was my first visit to Danbo Ramen. It is the Kerrisdale location. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a waitress who spoke with a strong Japanese accent. I had some difficulty understanding her and asked her to repeat herself. Unfortunately, she seemed somewhat impatient.
When placing my order, I had a few questions about the menu items listed in Romaji (Japanese phonetic spelling). The same waitress assisted me again, but she was unable to provide clear explanations, and the kitchen staff also seemed unsure. In addition, she checked on me frequently—almost every minute—while I was filling out the order form, which made me feel a bit rushed.
After placing my order, I looked up the restaurant’s online menu and realized that the explanation I received was inaccurate, resulting in me ordering something different from what I intended.
I understand that ramen shops in Japan are typically designed for quick meals and high customer turnover due to limited space, which I fully respect. However, I believe Danbo could benefit from additional staff training to help employees better understand Canadian dining culture and service expectations. During my visit, there were several empty tables, so the pressure to rush was unnecessary.
It would also be helpful if Japanese-speaking staff could improve their English communication skills and gain a clearer understanding of the menu...
