I went out for a ride on the Arbutus Greenway Saturday morning, but I didn't have a coffee before I left. I had noted this small quiet cafe previously and wanted any excuse to stop and try their coffee. At 10:30am there was one customer inside and four sitting at a table out front.
Three customers were ahead of me, and the single employee was doing an excellent job of balancing the rush and engaging with those waiting. Very warm and inviting vibes raised my expectations as another customer entered behind me.
Certainly, this must be a GOOD place with GOOD coffee. Although I did note most ordered regular coffees while I ordered a regular latte.
Great friendly polite service. When I finally got outside and had a sip of my latte, it was too hot to taste anything. I ate my banana bread and sipped slowly, but even after 5 minutes, it was still too hot to drink comfortably.
I drank maybe a third of coffee before i tossed it, and it tasted exactly the same as weak drip coffee despite having watched him use the espresso machine. There wasn't much, if any, foamed milk.
Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, and it was a regular coffee. The price was under $10, which seems to be correct for a $4.25 regular latte. I'm not happy it was so hot, BUT I was more discouraged because it wasn't good. Maybe my hopes...
Read moreThe location is quaint though a little run down and I was looking forward to a friendly experience as is typical of smaller establishments; however the service was surprisingly gruff at best, the coffee a bit watery, and to add injury to insult, all of the electrical outlets are taped up. When I asked if there were any electrical outlets that I could use for my laptop, I was answered with a brusque and seemingly derisive “no”.
The barista was so unpleasant and taciturn with everyone though; clearly, when someone that he knows wanders in, a lot of small talk is made, so the behavior is purposeful.
Sometimes you wander into a quaint place and you experience a warm and personal experience that only smaller establishments can provide. At other times you are made to feel like you are an outsider. If you go into this place with a laptop and are not one of the regular crowd it seems that you will be treated like you don’t belong… not a particularly nice way to enjoy your morning cup of coffee!
I would give this establishment one star except that they were not really rude per se- just not pleasant- and I’ve had even worse coffee before, so it...

I had high hopes for this place as it's right in my neighbourhood. I came in one morning and found that the cafe was empty. I ordered an Americano and helped myself to a free table. Only after another customer had come in and also set up his work area were we both informed that we would not be able to stay for more than an hour or hour and a half max.
This was pretty disappointing as I had chosen this place to work from in the morning based on the fact that there was no posted policy against it. I also was not told about any sort of time limit until after I had paid for my order and gotten myself situated. I would have likely chosen another location to work from had I known in advance.
The barista/owner(?) has great connections with his regulars and if you're a regular, I'm sure this is a great spot to get your cup of coffee. But I left that day feeling unwelcome and like an outsider. Won't be returning to this location in the...
