On the chopping block or chop chop to Chops?
I meant to give this place a try but somehow never gotten around to it. Maybe because I wasn’t too pleased with the Richmond location in terms of service and the quality of food during the last visit years ago. Regardless, here I am giving this new location a try.
This place is located in the Canada Place area overlooking the cruise ship harbour and Five Sails. The interior has a modern, trendy decor and furnishing; bar and lounge to the left, dining area with booth seats to the right, second floor has a couple of dining tables and also where the washrooms are located, patio seatings outside.
The host opened the door and greeted upon arriving (nice way to begin the experience). Were led to a small table but opted for a bigger table because didn’t want to feel cramped. Here were the food I ordered;
Cherry blossom mocktail and Caesar cocktail. The mocktail was quite refreshing but shouldn’t it be pink not purple? lol the Caesar was nicely garnished with 1/2 a pepperoni and a pickle spear but the drink itself was very salty with the pickle taste? Accidentally poured the picked juice into it or deliberately that’s the taste it’s meant to be? Steamed mussels. Decent portion, tasty white wine broth on the thicker side to fused better with the mussels. Unfortunately , the mussel meats were small, not the big plump juicy ones. Escargot stuffed mushrooms. A tasty little appy but I personally think too much breadcrumbs (yes I understand its purpose in absorbing the flavours, but it dominated all the textures of the other ingredients). Atlantic lobster tails. Very nice! Fresh and tasty! Thank goodness not rubbery like a lot of places. Loved it! Ahi tuna tataki. Nice and cleanly done, other ingredients didn’t take away the freshness of the ahi tuna. Dine out menu for 2 ($55/person) A) Caesar salad. Pretty average. B) roasted red pepper bisque. Came hot the way most soup should be and it was rich and creamy. C) miso glazed salmon. The salmon was beautifully done, it was tender and moist throughout. (You have no idea how often most restaurants overcook a salmon dish). Loved it! D) slow cooked prime rib. I was actually excited to enjoy a nice prime rib BUT unfortunately it was dry from end to end. (Struggled to eat 2/5 of it only) took a pic of it for reference. E) flourless chocolate torte. Nice little sweet to end the meal with. F) New York cheesecake with seasonal fruit compote. The compote was a bit more sour than sweet.
Overall, the experience here was absolutely different than what I had at the Richmond location last time. The service here was very good; nice team work in helping each others’ customers and our server was very attentive. The Dine Out menu was decently good in terms of price and food although the prime rib could be better. The food added on top of the dine out menu was also decent but a tiny adjustment wouldn’t hurt. It was a comfortable and relaxing dining experience with a positive vibe. Deserving of a 30% tip.
P.S. this is based on my experience here this time around and hope it’s the same or even better...
Read moreWe always visit Chop Steakhouse in Richmond and have been celebrating there for the last 10 years, for every anniversary and both of our birthdays for the last 10 years in a row, without miss.
We decided its about time to take a visit to the Coal Harbor Chop Steakhouse downtown and WOW did it not disappoint. From the moment we walked in the service was immediate, welcoming and personal. We made reservations and were seated promptly after arriving at our reservation time.
Our server Andrea took care of us for the night, such an amazing person, she is so kind and helpful, she went out of her way to make things the best they could be, always checking up on us and ensuring everything we ordered was on point, we had a great little side conversation about the desserts and steak which we really enjoyed. She is very knowledgeable and makes for a 5 star experience.
We orderded the Tomahawk Steak which is HUGE, along with truffle mashed potato and side asparagus. This meal was cooked to perfection by the chef, i did not get her name, but Andrea mentioned she would pass along our compliments to the chef. What an amazing cut of meat and for its size, the chef was able to season and grill it to PERFECTION. I had nothing but high praise for that steak and we actually enjoyed it so much that between my fiance and I, we finished the entire thing hahaha, it was that good. The sides also were no joke, truffle mashed was perfectly cooked and the asparagus was crisp to the bite and full of flavor but not over cooked.
One thing to not overlook here at Chop is one of the dessert dishes that i have searched for every where, no other restaurant has this dessert on their menu and no other place i think can do it as TO PERFECTION as Chop. The PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE. Such a simple dessert, but the way they have elevated it and made it into the STAR dessert here. The warm cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the drizzle of caramel sauce that you can only get hints of to compliment the entire dish with a bit of crunch from the nuts. HOLY CRAP, this dessert is my absolute favorite. To pair this dessert with the steak is all you need. Whoever created and put this dessert on the menu is brilliant, please DO NOT take this one off the menu.
The atmosphere is amazing and you just cant beat that view overlooking the water, i would 100 percent recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for amazing service and amazing food, look no further this is your spot. We plan on making the drive further out to downtown for all our next special dates and making Chop Coal Harbor Steakhouse our place to celebrate all our lives special moments moving forward into the future.
Thank you for both locations for being so good to us and for having the BEST Steaks in the entire lower mainland, better than Keg, better than Black and Blue, better than Seasons in the Park, better than Hy's, better than Gothams, better than Atlas, better than The Victor, better than Gordon Ramsay Steak. We have tried them all and NONE compare to the consistent quality and taste that Chop has delivered. ...

The appetizers are well proportioned and very good. In particular the Birria spring rolls (which are my favourite), chicken wings, and chili garlic shrimp are excellent and exactly what you’d want.
The Chop Burger is for me, perfect. The toasted brioche bun complements the brisket and chuck beef patty, which is seasoned well and a good size (6 ish ounces I believe). The sauce, vegetables, and patty are balanced wonderfully and no one flavour overwhelms another, leading to a balanced and fulfilling meal. The crispy fries on the side are a welcome accompaniment. This is probably a surefire option for most people and is great value as it’s highly customizable, fully satisfying and just a really good burger.
Of course, the steak is the real star, as expected of a great steakhouse. No matter which steak you choose, you’re in for a treat. The top sirloin or the New York strip, are my personal favourites. The meat is tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor without being overly salty, letting the high quality beef shine. The Steak Oscar is a standout option, while the prime rib is equally satisfying. The side dishes are noteworthy, with the baked potato and Yukon Gold mashed potatoes being my choice of sides. You can ask your server for drink pairings or suggestions but I’m not a wine guy so I can’t say anything about how it might enhance the flavour or anything.
For those seeking something other than steak, prime rib or burger, the Lemon Truffle Chicken Gnocchi is a must-try. The chicken is incredibly tender, not at all dry and lightly seasoned, while the gnocchi pairs perfectly to create a complete and delightful dish.
When it comes to dessert the chocolate mousse with whipped cream and pistachio praline is rich, silky, and decadent, with the contrasting textures of the mousse and praline elevating the experience. If you prefer classics, the crème brûlée and cheesecake are both creamy, smooth, and indulgent, with just the right balance of sweetness and richness. There is also a pineapple upside down cake which looked really good but I’ve never actually tried it, though I’m sure it’s fantastic.
The service is exceptional—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. The staff go above and beyond, offering helpful suggestions on meal and drink pairings and are very open to giving you their opinions on certain dishes if you are having trouble choosing.
The atmosphere is exactly what you’d expect from a top-tier steakhouse. Intimate and luxurious, the dim lighting, warm temperature, and plush seating create a relaxing yet upscale ambiance.
Overall, Chop Steakhouse at Coal Harbour is a fantastic choice that I highly recommend to anyone wanting an upscale...
