Google Maps guided us to Tremblay Motors. Apple Maps wanted to take us even further away. In fact, they are right below on the ground floor of Afghan Horsemen. So we walked down a back alley way towards the ground floor of Afghan Horsemen and found them among a number of smaller business. Not really understanding the menu description too well, I chose B–ONSAI. The first thing I love about these press sushi is that they are made with black sweet rice, much more nutritious than white sushi rice. Omakase comes with 16 pieces of pressed sushi in total. Our favourite was the tuna. I like the vivid beets sauce. But actually, everything tasted great. After we finished, I was still hungry and curious, and wanted to try from the custom menu. I didn't realize the sushi should be ordered as 8 cuts of 1 kind, 16 cuts of two kinds, and 16 cuts of 4 kinds. We ordered mushroom again, salmon, and tuna. We were there at lunch time and there was only one other occupied table. The server who is probably the owner, also prepared our dishes. The food seems to be made in advance – not a problem there since we are not dealing with raw seafood. Although the space, the interior is modern and calming, the seats are comfortable, the place is super clean. The service is good. The variety of sushi is sufficient. I especially appreciate the black rice. We returned for another meal and ordered D-AICHI because I thought the Fresh Veggie Mix would give me some more fresh vegetables. That's the trouble with most Japanese restaurant, they don't provide enough actual cruciferous vegetables. Unfortunately, the vegetables were pickled and neither of us enjoy vinegar on our food. I think it would very helpful if the menu provides more description of the food! The tofu, mango avocado and tuna mayo were not very exciting either. So when I ordered take out the third time, it was easy to choose B-ONSAI again – except we did not get the vivid beets and spicy mayo sauce which I...
Read moreI used a couple of coupons from my plant based deals book to have dinner with a friend at Cofu. They serve plant based sushi and are a sober bar as well. As the word "sober" implies, the beverages at this restaurant are all non alcoholic. It's a small space but very cozy and relaxing. There was even a screen set up, with the famous film "Spirited Away" projected onto it!

"Short Rib" sushi was kind of a mixed experience. We enjoyed the taste of it; however, even back in my days as a meat eater, short rib wasn't something I had ever come across on any nigiri sushi menu. This was a bit of a bizarre option although not necessarily bad. Just a bit of a strange concept, but we were happy with how it tasted.
Neither of us thought much of the drinks. The Ume Shu was quite bland and flavorless. Turkey Tail had a much stronger flavor, but while there was nothing wrong with how it tasted, there wasn't anything particularly pleasing about the taste either. Don't think I'd bother ordering any of their drinks again.
The two of us differed in our opinions of many of the other dishes. There were two dishes however that we both agreed on. The "Fried Fish" appetizer and the imitation Tuna sushi from our Omakase set were dishes that we both found to be very impressive.
While there were some items that missed the mark, it was overall an enjoyable meal and I would say that Cofu is definitely worth checking out!

I brought my partner here for pressed sushi on a whim, not even knowing the place was all vegan. I walked in as COFU was opening to the coziest atmosphere--Studio Ghibli's Howls Moving Castle was playing on projector on the wall facing the table we sat at, and the place had a nice, sleek, well coloured & design look to it. It was super cute.
Anyway, so we find out its vegan & and the sushi was all Akiko's recipes AND...
It was the best thing I'd ever put into my mouth in my ENTIRE life!!!!! ...!?I literally could not believe I was eating vegetables. Not because they were made to be flavoured like fish, but because they were cooked so uniquely with such diverse & deep tastes, and with textures I'd never imagined vegetables could have. The price was well worth it & especially for such a healthy meal, and we really enjoyed the medicinal mushroom drinks too.
This place was literally life & palette changing--I cannot recommend enough you go.
This was several days ago now, and it is STILL on my mind. I will be coming back for the rest of the party plate sushis I missed. And Akiko was so sweet to give us recommendations in town we had asked for, as we were just here for tourism.
But seriously, just for the tastes alone, 12/10. I am honoured to have met Akiko & her restaurant & it's staff in the days before I am certain s Akiko will become a world-reknown chef.
Cheers! Thank you so much for an amazing meal & such great...
