I have always been wanting to visit this newer coffee shop. Today I finally got a chance to try it half an hour before they closed. It was a quiet afternoon. A customer was sitting there, enjoying his coffee beverage and working on this laptop. A barista (or owner?) was working at the coffee shop. The barista was very friendly. I was kind of bad that I asked him a bunch of questions about the beverages on the menus. LOL he was polite to explain to me. At the end I picked a latte because I saw a lot of reviews and photos here were a cup of latte! He quickly made one for me. I took a photo of it and told him that I wrote reviews for Yelp, so I found this coffee shop. I had a first sip of latte. OHH... MANN.... it was so good!!! I asked for regular milk just like how I ordered latte at other coffee shops. This one was so good that it tasted so fresh. I could smell the fragrance of coffee from the cup. Each sip made me happy and satisfied for the day! LOL I don't know how to describe in any other words. It just tasted so different from others. You just come here and try it yourself! I was trying to order their burnt cheesecake as it was very popular. Unfortunately, the stove was broken. The coffee shop is waiting to fix it, so they can bake again. The barista asked me to come back in late September. The stove should be fixed and they would back and have a bunch of new pastries. I told the barista that I would DEFINITELY come back and try other coffee/tea beverages and must try their burnt cheesecake. I look forward to late September!! This coffee shop is right on East Hastings and one block west from Nanaimo Street. If you are lucky, you can find parking on East Hastings. You may have to pay for street parking though, but you can drive and park in the residential area and walk to the coffee shop.

Update: same owners as The Kop Coffee Roasters, if you don’t know them you need to get their beans because nothing compares! I pair them with Mükasi as my favourite coffee beans and I’ve tried plenty of options. I tried a Mocha which was one of the best I’ve ever had! Great vibes, there’s computer campers but it doesn’t kill it, still free tables available. Service is great, drip coffee is good and flat white was made to perfection (with oat milk). Pastries looked REALLY good, I had the vegan chocolate chip cookies and they were perfect with coffee. But what made me the happiest is that they sell Foonie (@foonie.ca) cards which is an artist that I love love and always support. She moved to MontrĆ©al and it’s getting harder to find her cards around town (I personally like to touch the cards before I buy them, but you can find her on Etsy). There’s other cute merchandise, it’s a nice space overall.

ā€¼ļøUPDATE: this place is no longer dog friendly and do not have dog treats šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜” Penny Royal is one of the best coffee shops along Hastings! It's truly a hidden gem. I've come here quite a few times to work/study and the staff is always so accommodating. They have wonderful coffee and a variety of pastries and sandwiches as well! The best part is that they're dog friendly and have dog treats too. šŸ’— They also have a cute rewards program and I often get discounts/promotions. My dog, Koda, has pretty bad anxiety and we were trying new medication for him. We needed to put him in a stimulating environment to "test" out the new medication and I am so thankful for Penny Royal. Before the medication he would cry and be scared to enter, but after, he's able to lay down and hang out while I work!

I happened upon Pennyroyal Coffee when walking in the Hastings-Sunrise area. The shop is tucked away amongst a series of similar buildings, I almost missed it initially, but I'm sure glad I went it. The cafe itself is very warm and inviting, from the pale orange walls to the family-style wooden table, the interior feels as though it is welcoming you from the minute you step foot in the door. Once I reached the display case I knew I was in for a treat: Espresso Rye Cookies, Basque Cheesecake, and- my personal favorite- Caneles de Bordeaux. These Caneles did not disappoint- I cannot recommend more highly. After choosing my sweets I migrated over to the coffee bar where I was greeted by a very knowledgeable barista, who- after speaking with- I learned is in fact one of the owners. Max made me one of the smoothest lattes I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. Vancouver seems to really love the very fruity and acidic espresso that I've never been able to fully get behind, so it was refreshing to finally see someone doing something different. Max explained that the beans being used are Indonesian, which holds great meaning for the owners as that is where their first cafe was. Aside from the excellent food, coffee, and atmosphere, what will keep me coming back to this place above everything else is the people. It's not everyday that you see the owners of a cafe in Vancouver being the ones to do all the work. They are usually one degree removed from the operation, but not here. Max and Cynthia (the owners of the cafe) are in there everyday serving coffee and food. It is the family cafe that Vancouver is missing. Thank you Pennyroyal for bringing a sense of community back to this city-...

my first time at pennyroyal was sometime in september 2020. i was with a friend at the time and we were craving some sweet treats and coffee. we saw pennyroyal was open and decided to give it a try.

when we walked in, we could feel the welcoming vibes. we were warmly greeted by the barista. she had such a bright aura while making our orders, plus she was efficient.

when i took my first sip of my latte, i was filled with a warm sense of joy. the latte was sweet, but not too much to be saccharine, and had just the right amount of milk too. the chocolate cookie that i bought as well was prefect. the whole experience brightened my day.

from that point on, i have been going to pennyroyal quite frequently. their drink options are great quality and their treats are to die for. you can tell they make everything with love and care. all the baristas i have met have been nothing but kind, lovely people! every experience i have had with them is nothing short of amazing. i hope everyone has a chance to try pennyroyal cafe. you won’t...
