ok so Rumble Fish was a bit too greasy for my taste. The batter doesn’t hold up compared to other places I’ve tried. What I did enjoy was their tartar sauce—it’s actually really good. But I came for the fish, not just the tartar.
The pricing is definitely on the steeper side: they charge around $15–16 for a single piece of fish, and the portion is small—about 3 oz, while most other spots give closer to 4 oz. The cod tasted stale, and the salmon was a bit rubbery—not very fresh.
There’s also no parking in the immediate area need to go hunting, which I guess encourages foot traffic, but it’s not ideal. It’s located beside the well known Chicken place on Hastings. I might go back, but they really need to improve both the quality of the fish and the portion sizes. If you look at other reviews, compare the size of the tartar container to the actual fish—it gives you a pretty clear idea of how small the serving is. I did my due diligence, checked reviews before ordering and was surprised—and my photo shows exactly what I got from them. Honestly, it looked like the kind of portion you’d get in a frozen dinner.
I was originally going to give them 2 stars, but bumped it up to 3 need to say some good things the atmosphere is inviting and aside from their killer tartar sauce they have friendly customer service. Also one positive: they offer grilled fish, which is nice.
Overall, my issue is the value just isn’t there. It feels like they’re targeting high-volume, single-fish orders sub ~$15 plus tax entry point? but do not have a unique differentiator. I guess it could always be worse. In this era of shrinkflation and “less is more,” they could do more magnifying but might cut into margins. We shall see.
On a general note, past 8 p.m., the area can feel less welcoming at the street level, so just be aware if you’re visiting in...
Read moreI saw a Rumble Fish ad on social media and thought this would be a good place to try with mom. She loves fish and chips. Usually, we would head down to Steveston, but this was nearby in Vancouver. The place already had a great rating on Google reviews only after a few months of opening. As we entered, we noticed it was getting busy at 6:30 PM with only a few deuce top tables available. There's a capacity limit of about 24 seats in total and we were very fortunate to snag the table along the front window. The atmosphere was energetic and vibrant.
Service was casual with short order at the front counter and the food was brought to the table when ready. The staff were really friendly and pleasant to talk to. We ordered the fish (cod) sandwich and the 1 piece fish (cod) and chips. Like typical fish and chip restaurants, our food came in a paper lined basket. The fish and chips had a generous helping of their homemade tarter sauce, coleslaw, and a generous helping of chips. Mom and I were able to split both dishes. Both items were fantastic. The fish was perfectly cooked with a really crispy batter and a super moist fish.
Overall, a really great little spot in the heart of...
Read moreThe first time I tried Rumble Fish Restaurant was ordering take out of a 2 piece cod and chips dinner. Great price, nice portion size and absolutely phenomenal flavour. The batter to fish ratio was perfect. The batter was crisp, and not too greasy! The fries were amazing, and the dressing for the coleslaw was great and not to overpowering. Even the tartar sauce was perfect!
And here's the kicker... unfortunately I was unable to eat my take out for about 20 minutes after my husband picked it up. And it was still amazing enough to praise this restaurant. Love to see a dedicated fish and chips shop, one was seriously needed in the area! And I love that the food was so amazing! (So other take out enjoyers know, I think what helped keep the fish crisp enough was that my husband kept the box open and used a fabric grocery bag to transport then folded over the top to keep it warm.)
I cannot wait to try it fresh, or order take out again! Absolutely divine fish and chips. It hit that craving...
