I've been here three times, and the food is AMAZING - but, two stars for AWFUL service from the waitress for her timing and attitude. We wanted a specific table so we waited longer to be sat, the hostess was lovely and checked in with us every few minutes. After we sat, we waited about ten minutes for our friends, the waitress checked in for drinks and sighed at us/walked away abruptly when we only asked for water. After ten minutes we decided to order for our friends so it would be there when they arrived. We told her we were ready, she barely acknowledged us and it took her ten minutes to come back and actually take an order, at which point our friends had already arrived. We ordered a growlita but my friend forgot her ID, so i asked for just a beer for myself instead, but she brought me a growlita anyway. When she brought the food, I explained to her, and she fixed it, but was super rude about it. The food was quick, but we were missing one steak taco which she forgot to deliver, and it arrived ten minutes after we had finished all of our other food and only after we asked twice about it. She did not check in to see how the food was mid meal. At the end, she asked if we wanted anything for dessert, and then rushed us out by bringing the bill with dessert. She split the appies between all four of us even though only two of us shared them, and we made that super clear at the beginning (or, i thought we did - she never asked when she billed us). At that point we were so annoyed with her that we wanted to get out of there, so we paid while she hovered over our shoulders and watched us pay (again, super rude). I wish we had the nice short-curly-haired waitress instead - she's served us before and she was lovely, as was the hostess.... anyways. Would go to the commissary again in a heartbeat, but would probably decline service from the lady who works the front section on...
Read moreIt has been a couple times since I've come here, but all before the pandemic and the line up were huge, so I've always decided to just go across the way to Gringo.
I finally got a seat this time around with my friend since re-open seating at restaurants and during HAPPY HOUR!! Yeah, their Happy Hour menu wasn't the best compared to other places I have been, but it was the only time to get us seats. Maybe it is a pro? idk.
Regardless, me and my friend haven't seen each other for 2 years and chose this to be our meeting place for the night. We made it for happy hour and got some drinks and tacos for the night!
I ordered a Horchata Margarita, and dayum. I love a horchata, but spiked with a little tequila makes it SOOOO MUCH BETTER. Maybe a little bit too dangerous. And then we got a side of their albacore ceviche and well, I wanted it to be a bit more vinegary because I love a good sour ceviche.
We might have ordered TOO much tacos because I was not expecting their tacos to be STACKKED full of fillings. We ordered 3 each, and that was just too much..... I recommend the 2 is enough to make you satisfied. I ordered their famous fish taco, which made them THE TACOFINO. On top of that, I ordered the Pork Al Pastor and the Octopus Tostada.
Their fish taco is always a staple with them. The fish is perfectly crunchy with each bite, and refreshing with that mix of the tomatoes of their salsa fresca. The Pork Al Pastor is just stewed to perfection. And heavy on flavour, but the pineapples just cut the heaviness with acidity. I was SOOOO surprised with their Octopus Tostada. HOLY COW! This was a bomb though. By the time i was biting into the 3rd taco I was extremely full, but this just made me want to finish it! All 3 tacos deserved the clean plate club for sure.
Will be coming back for sure with friends as the pandemic eases up and I hope it won't get as busy as...
Read moreFirst time to a Tacofino restaurant. I have previously been to the food truck. I tried 2 tacos. The pork jowl taco had very little filling in the 5" round taco shell. The fish taco had a nice big piece of fried fish in it, much more filling than the pork jowl. The fish had a nice crispy batter. They were both good, but nothing amazing. I like my tacos to have more of a fresh zingy taste (from citrus, or aoli, or pickled veggies as toppings), I found these somewhat bland and one-note. They weren't bad, but nothing I would crave again. They were $6 each, which is not cheap. I also split an order of tator tots with my friend. The tots themselves tasted fresh and I think had a nice crispy outside. But they had so much toppings and sauce on them that it made the tots all soft and mushy. Again they were fine, but not enough diverse flavours for me, kind of one-note again. My friend had her 2 year old son with her. We asked the waiter what was on the tator tots as she wanted to make sure there were some 'plain' ones that we could give her son, she asked if she should just order a separate 'kids' tator tots for him? The waiter said no, and that there will definitely be unsauced tots in there for us to give her son. But when the plate came it was really smothered in toppings and sauce. So she was kind of disappointed to not have any pieces we could give her son. I know tacofino has a pretty huge following, but based on my visit here and from the food truck previously I found them both just so-so. I love supporting local businesses though and I know a lot of other people who really like it. Maybe just not for me. The wait staff was all...
