This might be the most over hyped place of 2025. We went out for dinner to try this place that had been getting a lot of noise in social media, and frankly it not only did not deliver, but I also ended up with food poisoning.
I rarely leave reviews at restaurants, but this was so bad I was inclined to do so. If you are wondering about my credentials, I eat Japanese food regularly, have tried almost if not every popular sushi not only in Vancouver, but regularly go to Japan since I was a kid, even waking up to go eat at fish markets so I know a thing or 2.
If I have to say comment on any positive aspects, the location is probably the only thing remarkable about the restaurant. The staff were also nice and quick, and everything seemed to be clean, sadly I cannot say that about the ingredients themselves.
Let’s talk tempura, or more accurately, deep-fried batter cosplay. It was 80% crust, 10% disappointment, and 10% broccoli (the only thing that tasted like food). The “signature” nabe? A sad, lukewarm bath of unseasoned broth and veggies that made me feel like someone forgot to cook dinner and just gave up. The only semi-redeemable part? The $3 udon add-on—which tasted fine, probably because it wasn’t made there.
Who I went to with, had a salad and an ebi mayo, and had the same issue I had with my tempura. A shrimp so tiny that your ex swears it’s normal sized . Not only that, but lettuce wasn’t fresh and the avocado was not mature enough, to the point that we wondered if the unripe avocado texture served a purpose to the salad. Not that it does matter since there were a total of like 4 mini slices of it, together with what felt like a cherry tomato sliced in 4. Not worth it for the 10ish dollars we paid for it.
We could’ve let all of this slide if it weren’t for the fact that both of us getting food poisoning and being sick for the entire trip. While who I went with did not have it as bad as I did, I almost ended up at the hospital if it weren’t for my beloved pedialyte. We could have gotten un-‘lucky’ (haha get it?), but we know this was the cause of poor quality of ingredients by the restaurant and raises quality and...

From the decor to the lighting, I literally - no word of a lie - felt like I stepped into a movie based in Tokyo in the 80s. Every time I looked around I found another element of the decor that I was obsessed with.
Beyond that, the food was also very very good. But the stand out by far were the creamy spicy udon noodles. I’ve been trying to recreate them at home and I simply can’t. My boyfriend actually literally licked the plate clean and normally I wouldn’t be the biggest fan of that, but this time the only reason I wasn’t a fan was because I didn’t think to do it myself, I would’ve if he didn’t beat me to it.
There are other things on the menu that I would suggest trying such as their house roll, and everything we did have was incredibly well done, it’s just that most of the other menu items we have found at other Japanese restaurants in the city. Service was great, we went in the middle of them having a lot of TikTok hype, so they were busy but the service staff were great, knowledgeable and service was quick especially considering how busy it was. Location wise it’s just perfect for a date night, at least for my boyfriend and I we love to walk the sea-walk after dinner. Although if you happen to go when there’s a DJ at the beach or the fireworks I could imagine it would be an entirely different story.
In a sea of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver I suggest coming to Lucky to experience the ambience and get the spicy udon noodles....

THE INFULENCERS HAVE LIED TO ME ONCE AGAIN 😃🎉🥳‼️‼️‼️with this place popping up all over my feed recently, i rly had high expectations for it, but once again it fell short from it. lets start off with their 12 pcs chefs assorted platter: on top of perfectly seasoned fluffy rice lies sashimi which resembles Russian roulette- you don't know which ones gonna suck and which ones gonna make u wanna go for seconds. the scallop was avg tasting, and all their fish was mid, while some of them were fishier than the sea itself. the oshi were all drowned in mayo and tasted bland and revolting, but their shrimp nigiri topped with truffle was like a godsend- the scent of truffle envelops ur entire mouth and brings ur taste buds to heaven. 3/5 however, things only go downhill from here, starting with the tempura drenched in canola oil- with each bite i took, it felt like i was chocking from all that fat and 0.75cm thick batter and unseasoned tempura. recently, its been the worst tempura i had in a while, or maybe i just wasn't hungry enough... 0/5 and to end it off, their sesame bomb roll, which was drowning in this sauce resembling césar salad sauce without the acidity and triple the sugar, so i thought i was eating a California roll but a dessert version... like if i wanted a dessert i wouldn't order an entree......
