Been going here for 10+ years and I have to say, this most recent visit was by far the most disappointing. I came here for lunch and as soon as I walked in, it smelled like wet towel and washroom stench. I was quite thrown off by the smell but didn’t want it to ruin this lunch date with my family. While waiting for my husband, I requested a bowl of hot water to warm milk for my baby (forgot my thermos). Typically, it’s a non issue for family/ kid friendly restaurants. However, when requested, the server had to go ask the head server. The head server came by and said that I can use their microwave, I explained that breastmilk cannot be microwaved. She then proceeded to tell me that she doesn’t have a bowl big enough to hold the bottle. I called her out on her lie and pointed to their menu that showed a picture of a bowl of ramen. She reluctantly told me she would go ask someone higher up if it’s okay to give hot water. She came back with a take out container with hot water, which is fine. But the rest of our lunch felt awkward cause that server seemed annoyed of our table. For a family of 3 (husband, baby and I) we spent +$80 on our meal, a little hot water doesn’t seem like a big ask. I will not be returning to this place.

A Korean-staffed establishment with good service and okay food. Came in around 4:45 ok so restaurant was pretty empty before the dinner rush. Saw good reviews on the lunch boxes but it was past time so I Ordered the Nana Galbi Box. Batter for tempura was good, and one tempura item was part of a salmon filet. The dynamite roll has rice on the outside. Unconventional but fine. Ribs were as expected. dressing had the right balance. Gyoza was also done to a good finish but could have been crispier. Missed the wasabi and ginger on the first service and had to ask for it. Feels like it could use a dry and cheap carb like rice or noodles to balance it out and give a companion to the ribs. The choice of dynamite roll with shrimp tempura alongside tempura as a major feature seems a little redundant and makes the box a bit one-dimensional. The miso soup was fine. The sunomono that came with the box was uninspired. Had some green in it, and just noods. A token mini slice of lemon would have been a nice garnish, even if just for aesthetics. Would come back if in the area and needed a quick bite, but not something I’d phone home about.

They have gone downhill significantly over the years. I would recommend any other sushi place in the vicinity over Sushi Nanaimo. Aside from lesser quality of food, they obviously do not know how to deal with general upkeep. This place is a rat infested hole in the wall. The staff just hangs out in the alley smoking cigarettes instead of trying to make any effort to clean up their space. There are so many obvious signs of deterioration of the business just from the outside. Broken lights. Houseless junkies using at their entryway. The trash piles up for weeks and often blows out into the street and the nearby park etc. I know that rats in the alley are inevitable, but when you do absolutely nothing to keep them out of your restaurant is just disgusting and lazy. I have not been a customer of Sushi Nanaimo in a very long time and I will never be again.

Very disappointed. Used to be our night out sushi place. But now the place is filthy. The floor is sticky with left over food and garbage. The plates and cups and tables were not clean.

What gross me out the most is that when we asked for a take out box and bill, the waitress put the check book inside the box and hand it to me. Imagine a check book that was in contact with money, hands and never been sanitized since the day one...

Excuse me, do you even know what food safe is? Who is going to put good sushi in a box that was just hold a dirty check book? When I told her that she have this blank look on her face and pretend she didn't speak English. No, I was not being rude, she really said she didn't understand me. I had to bring this up with another waiter and behold the last straw, he gave me a new box but put the dirty box back to stack and ready to be serve to another unsuspecting customer.

I am very sorry, this actually happened right before my eyes. I fear what they do where we can't see in the back kitchen. For those who think I am being germaphobe, I dare you to lick or eat something that came in contact with an used restaurant check book.

I have to give credit to one single waitress (out of four or five waitress/waiters) who seem to be only one who cares to serves the customers and doing her job while the rest was standing around busy talking to each other. It's Sunday lunch time, there were about five tables occupied.

Unsafe to consume anything that came out of that restaurant. It's very sad for me as this was my sushi place for over four years.

Will never return...I would like to give a No-Star but that's...

I want to share this with all current and prospective clients. I have been coming here for several years now. Actually I first went here on the 2nd day they were open. It has very good quality at a reasonable price. Today was something special though. I had a deluxe bento box for lunch. Always good. A substantial portion, and a bit of everything. As you all know by now, because of COVID-19, one must sign in with a contact phone number. At 6:30 I received a phone call from Nanaimo Sushi. I became nervious thinking it must be to inform me of a positive tested employee or customer. WRONG! They had called to tell me I had left my wallet in the restaurant. They wanted to know when I would be coming to get it. I had no idea I had left it. On my arrival shortly after I was very appreciative of the fact it was being returned intact. All my credit cards, drivers license, and a multitude of others, including several hundred dollars were safely tucked inside. I thank them repeatedly, pulled a hundred dollar bill and offered it to the waitress. She declined to accept it. I tried again, and again she refused to take what I so eagerly wanted to offer her! I said, "are you you sure?" She replied, "thank you, but that's OK." I wanted everone to know about this. This goes far beyond good food & service. This is about HONOR & CREDIBILITY! An increasingly rare commodity these days. This is the best of all reasons for a full throated endorsement. THREE CHEERS FOR THE STAFF OF NANAIMO SUSHI! Written with much gratitude...

The worst experience I have ever had at restaurants in Vancouver! Our group of 3 persons came to the restaurant to have a lunch on the last Tuesday, April 18th. The restaurant was not crowded at all with only one customer when we came. The food was good with the reasonable price. But the service was completely terrible. The server did not take our order correctly. After waiting for my food around 10 mins while my friends enjoyed their meals, I asked the server and found that she did not take my order. We ordered 2 sets of lunchbox, but she just got 1. Then, I had to wait more 10 mins to get the meal. She did not say sorry about this mistake. When we almost finished the meal, another server ( a female, tall and thin, wearing glass) came to clean up the empty dishes on the table. The soy sauce bowl was almost full, but she did not care about it and likely dropped the bowl in the box in front of my position. Therefore, the soy sauce splashed on my hoodie. She was very calm, continued taking away the dirty dishes to the kitchen and lately coming back our table with some tissues. Not only did not she apologize to me, but I also did not feel that she was sorry for her doings because there were no other expressions but unacceptably cold on her face.

We have never experienced the bad service like this in Vancouver. We were very upset and left $5 tip even I thought that they did not deserve...
