Imagine if you will, walking into a piece of history and sitting down to have a meal. For many people this experience has happened around the world, but I'm not traveling at the moment, I'm at home in Vanderhoof BC. And the little piece of history is the OK Cafe. If you haven't heard of it you need to get yourself acquainted. No seriously. I walked in and was immediately hit by the rich smell of their home roasted coffee and fresh pies. It was a decadent experience. My meal for this morning was simple, breakfast. I ordered the eggs, scrambled, with sausage and bacon as sides, and of course toast. I also ordered their dark roast coffee so I could give an honest opinion of that as I'm a bit of a coffee snob. The coffee was served first as per usual, it had an amazing aroma, I take cream and very little sugar and it was a good call for this cup of Java. The flavour is well built with a proper roast. Very fresh, a hint of earthiness and an almost dark chocolate note. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone over the commercial places such as Tim Hortons or Starbucks. As for the food itself. The eggs were done right, a little sad that they don't appear to be farm fresh, but I digress. The bacon and sausage is standard fare, and the toast was actually very good. Very hearty. I also got a side of hash browns, which are actually home fries here. They taste like they were fried in bacon grease, I may be wrong, but they were good. Overall, I'd say the coffee was phenomenal, the service by the server Dylan was incredible, and the food was, well, OK! Pun intended. I suggest you give it a try. I'll be coming back for a sampling of their other menu options at a later...
Read moreI heard there was a new chef who did Filipino food here in the last month or two and so I stopped in for lunch. We ordered a pork knuckle dish that was out of this world delicious, crispy and rich with a perfect vinegar dipping sauce, and a pork belly dish that was also delicious and crispy and rich and like nothing I had ever tasted.
On top of that we had a "chocolate dinosaur" which was a fancy chocolate milkshake type drink that was the perfect not-too-sweet despite having like five kinds of chocolate in it, and my favorite the halo halo which is a dessert full of chewy sweet textural things, ice cream, and shaved ice (like a bubble tea but more fun).
On top of that the service was warm, friendly, and quick and the space was comfortable. I will definitely be stopping every time I go through town. Right on the highway so it's easy to get to. Never expected to find these sorts of flavours in Vanderhoof and I'm...
Read moreWent in to the OK cafe to grab a coffee and when we asked about options for coffee flavours( as what were advertised on the menu on the wall) was met with a very curt, “ we don’t have that!”, from the extremely rude woman behind the counter. When we asked about another option was told we only have regular coffee and she promptly turned around and left us! So we left and we will not...
