State & Main — Restaurant in Vaughan

Modern restaurant for casual comfort eats, large portions and affordable prices. I went here with my family for dinner on a Sunday evening, it was very busy - lucky we made a reservation!

Everything was pretty slow, food took some time to come out and we waited about 30 mins after finishing our apps for the mains. Our server disappeared the whole evening. She took our order, went MIA for the rest of the night and reappeared at the end to settle the bill. No one cleared our plates after appetizers so we had no room for the mains and really had to Tetris it ourselves. It seemed like we were the only table not getting any service..

I asked 3 different waitresses to refill our drinks, they all said sure no problem, walked off and never came back. I even witnessed one of the waitresses that I asked for refills, go straight to the table next to us and refill all their drinks, but never returned to ours. We had no napkins either.

They brought out 3 of our mains (one being steak) and 10 minutes later the remaining 2 came out along with the mushrooms that go with that steak.

Towards the end we ordered the chocolate brownie with ice cream, asked them to warm up the brownie… The waitress said of course no problem. It was not warmed up.

When packing our leftovers I asked for the lid for the sauces (since the sauces are put into little take out containers without the lid), the waitress said she will bring out a side sauce for me to take home. She came with the bill, literally 5 minutes later, but no sauce.

It was very chaotic and disorganized. I’m not sure where our waitress was the whole night. The only dish we actually liked was the steak.

Joeys or Jack Astor’s would have been a better pick. I do not recommend and will...

In comparing genres of restaurants, a suitable comparison of this restaurant is something like the Pickle Barrel or to an extent The Keg. Prices are much more reasonable than the Keg and the food quality is on par with the Keg. Prices are competitive and slightly better than Pickle Barrel, and quality is far better than Pickle Barrel. Food serving sizes were proper and appropriate, bordering on plentiful - a nice change from the effects of shrinkflation. Restaurant was clean and organized. Many patrons enjoyed wine with dinner, suggesting affordable drinks. Staff was very responsive, attentive, and able to make appropriate dining recommendations. The butter chicken bowl was better than butter chicken at most Indian restaurants (where they skimp like crazy on chicken and just offer runny gravy out of a grocery store jar). The butter chicken was strong in flavour and well-made - appropriate for serving to Indian customers. They use real bacon in other dishes, and not the cheap imitation garbage you receive at other restaurants. Dish preparation was fresh, served hot, and all dishes made it to our table nearly simultaneously. Good staff teamwork - we were served by the manager but two other waitresses helped deliver our dishes so that all dishes arrived at our table nearly simultaneously.
