i’ve been a to this place a few times, the coffee and baked goods are wonderful and the service is also fantastic. I felt good supporting such a great business until i looked further into them, i realised that they don’t actually employ the disabled adults you see working. they get paid on saturdays, but even then you can’t leave a tip. you can only make a “donation” so the money isn’t actually going towards the workers. in their regular tuesday-friday, the people working actually pay to be there. i’ve additionally overheard some pretty unsavoury conversations happening out in the open with the staff. The worst telling an employee who was visibly upset (crying) to “act professional.”I even overheard this employee, who seemed to be having a hard time, say that she wants to work but is feeling overwhelmed. she was made to keep working despite being visibly distressed. it’s clear to me this place is not neurodiversity affirming, lacks visible accommodations, and I will not be coming back. it’s a shame, this place really could...

The dessert are fresh and well balanced and beautifully prepared and up there with some of the best baked goods in Durham (leagues better than Belle Vie, which has taken a sharp dip in quality despite outrageous prices!)
Prices are very fair, especially considering the large portions and superb quality. Expect a euphony of "Welcome to Melly's" as you enter. Enthusiastic staff will put a smile on your face and make your experience a pleasure.

Read moreFor weeks I’ve been so excited to visit Melly’s and today my experience was even better than anticipated. For starters, I love the inclusive, welcoming, fully wheelchair accessible cafe which is often very difficult to find. There are beautiful handmade items available for purchase which I will be coming back for since holiday season is right around the corner!! Makes for great gifts. I can feel the positive energy here and I will definitely be coming back. Today I had a mocha latte with whipped cream and a chocolate cupcake - Yum. Both tasted wonderful and the cupcake I will definitely come back for. Melly’s cafe should be in every town. Thanks for creating opportunities for many deserving individuals. The world is a better place...
