Golden Chopstick Chinese Food — Restaurant in Winnipeg

From 2007 to 2015 I used to order from Golden Chopstick 2-4 times a month, the food was always phenomenal. I moved away from Winnipeg in 2015, I’m back now, 2024, for a few months and was excited to eat at Golden Chopstick again.

I don’t know what they have done but the food is disgusting. The chicken fried rice has barely any chicken in it, there’s no egg, carrots or peas in it like it used to have and it has the consistency and texture of melted marshmallows, like a rice crispy square.

The egg rolls look good until oil squirts in your mouth and out everywhere making a huge mess, they never used be this greasy and the grease takes over the actual taste. The veal, has too much breading, it’s also way too greasy and was also tasteless and I think it was breaded pork they gave me, not veal.

For the chow mein, my boys said the chicken was good but the noodles and veggies stunk so bad, I’ve never had them smell like they did, I did not eat the chow mein but my 2 kids that did eat it, couldn’t finish as they said it did not taste like chow mein should.

As for the French Fries, they were tasteless and had the texture/consistency of day old fries and had no salt or seasoning. The white rice and chicken balls, I don’t know what they tasted like because I just threw out all this food (my order was $119 and some change) being over an hour from Winnipeg it is not worth the drive back to get a refund.

We ordered in June and we were really happy with the food we received, so we ordered again for my birthday this past weekend. It was so bad I don't know what to start with. The worst item was the sauce for the lemon chicken. It had no lemon in it, but it did taste like rusty metal and oven cleaner. It was so bad I almost vomited. I was very worried about other people possibly becoming ill from it; therefore, I contacted the restaurant. They weren't concerned at all about it, saying it wasn't possible because they don't use oven cleaner. I explained that it wasn't necessarily oven cleaner, but tasted of strong chemicals. They continued to deny anything was wrong. I told them I wasn't looking for compensation, I just didn't want them to make anyone sick. we needed a new place as our old places either closed down or the food wasnt as good anymore. we looked at reviews and decided on this place. it is excellent. The person working was frirendly on the phone and in person. you definitely get a lot of food! they fill those containers to the top of the lid! the only reason i didnt give it a 5 star is because i felt the chicken fried rice wasnt great. it tasted burnt and was very plain. there was no peas and carrots or onion in it and the chicken pieces were very small and non existent. plus the singapore chow mai was a curry dish which wasnt stated on the menu. i didnt like it. the ginger beef was fabulous except there was too many onions and peppers in it. i prefer just to have the beef. so i just docked 1 start for those small complaints. overall, this is a great place and i highly recommend it. we will definitely return. you will get your moneys worth. we also got it packed in a big box and though how much did we buy??
