I came here on a hot, windy afternoon, needing something light, refreshing, but sustaining. Of course my natural reaction to visiting this little shop is to order its namesake. Tacos. But which one? There was a variety of simple, yet complex options to choose from, combinations of 3 that seemed limitless and exciting rather than overwhelming. I didn't dare move my eyes to the other parts of the menu, it was my first time and I was shy and trying to savor the mystery and stretch out the excitement of something new. I knew I wanted tacos and that was enough, why ruin the possibility to feel the same way again, next time I come in, ready to try something else. I should mention I couldn't help notice the "$1" sign next to a classic dual slushie machine. One horchata and one lime. I love lime, but a horchata slushie!? I place my order, and kindly, the person behind the counter directed me to get my own drink! I was expecting icy chips of creamy drink to flow from the nozzle but instead got a splashing liquid that ran down my arm. I only say this because there did not seem to be a bathroom, and I really really cannot stand being dirty sometimes, especially before eating, but the ambiance didn't allow me to get angry. The little business was bustling, but not too busy, all the workers took their time with me and my friends, they looked happy, which inevitably made the food taste better, no doubt. Their customers looked full of gratitude and comfort.
We waited in the breezy little building on the stools, taking in the joyous atmosphere and anticipating satisfaction. We could see the food others were eating. Knowing that the food we paid humbly for would for certain be delicious, absolutely extended the time spent happy.
The tacos made you alert, wanting to taste every intentional ingredient. The hot sauces were unmatched, delivering, and punishing (in a good way). Too much and you knew you wasted a bite with too much hot sauce because your mouth would burn. I got 3 different tacos, but each stood on their own. Winning me over. Each bite I'd change my mind as to which was my favorite. The only thing that took away from my experience was feeling guilty about the styrofoam containers, which I will not dock a star for because I know it's not the owners fault. That to serve people good quality food while making a profit for their livelihood, they need to cut costs in other ways.
This place takes me out of Winnipeg's affinity for convenience and "cool" aesthetic and offers me honesty and closeness. Visiting Sargent Taco Shop felt like a truly mutual exchange of experience and emotion.
Thank you to the team working. I will be back as much as possible, each time mentioning to all the people that day about this one of a kind place they have probably driven by many times not knowing they were passing something so rare and...
Read moreI seldom talk of excellent places in this city, this is one of those rare occasions. I have always been a massive fan of mexican food, so much so that I consider it a bigger comfort food for me than my own native food. Now onto the actual details, the menu is really clear cut and simple, they don't put a wide variety of dishes there....but if you know your restaurants, you know that this is a really good sign. While short and sweet, I'm very sure that the food on the menu is spectacular. I was here yesterday for some tacos and boy did these tacos blow my mind. I got a simple beef steak taco meal and the service was prompt and efficient. The tacos themselves were phenomenal: juicy delectable cuts of beef warmly hugged by the freshest tortilla. The best part was the delicious spicy habanero sauce. Man, it just made my whole week. I haven't had proper spicy mexican food here, this was more than a breath of fresh air, the food went straight to my soul. I hope I come here for many, many years and I hope their quality remains the same if not any better! Carlos I talked to you yesterday before leaving the restaurant, you seem like very humble people serving up the best tacos I have ever had. Thank you so much Sargent Taco shop, you have in me a new regular. See you...
Read moreThis is not a local mom and pop shop. That is highly undervaluing what this establishment is.
I haven't been to Mexico, but whenever i have been with a mexican to this place they can pinpoint which place in mexico they have had this type of taco. Many many people who have eaten here enjoy their tacos but what they dont understand is they are getting a taste of various places across Mexico.
Their cow tongue is from a different part(my fav), napales(cactus) is from another, chorizo is from another, and so on and so forth. Plus they have this awesome wholesome variety of sides like pozole, the soups, beans and rice and mexican style donuts, and they add stuff every now and then. The most brilliant thing they do is adding the grilled cheese into their tacos. Their acccompanimrnt salsa's all the three kinds are extremely fresh and tasty. I get why the Mexican folks adore this place.
This is a no nonsense taco shop that does it have it has to be done and how its done and they do it with a flare and awesome know how about what they are doing.
Always fun...
