Finally tried this place today after living in Transcona for 3 years.
Atmosphere: Very traditional Thai restaurant with its decore and music. Simple restaurant and not very busy. However we went at 4pm on a Thursday and many people came in and out for pick-up orders. They also so Skip the Dishes. Overall nice simple quiet place that is very clean.
Staff: server had a language barrier. Wasn't able to recommend what was popular on the menu. This wasn't much of a problem for us however. He was nice and respectful and very timely with service.
Food: wow. Delicious. I haven't had much experience with Thai food except for the odd Pho here and there around the city. So re decided to order more than what we could eat in one sitting so we could try a variety of dishes. Good selection of appetizers for the lover of meat and deep-fried food. We however opted for the summer vegetable and meat lettuce rolls which is a staple across Thai cuisine. Generous portion, fresh and flavorful fillings and drop dead amazing sauce. I believe it was a peanut/spicy/sweet sauce that complimented the salad rolls very well. Picture below. We also had to try a soup. We opted for a lighter broth. They had a good selection of creamy and salty soups, curry, pho, wonton, etc. All looked delicious but we tried the deluxe wonton soup. Salty but also very flavorful. Very generous with veggies and meat and delicious (? homemade) wontons. Can't wait to try other soups and salads. Picture below. Next we tried a curry dish. There are 5 different curry based dishes with veggies and choice of meat. We tried a red/yellow looking one which I am blanking on the name right now. But it was seriously crack on a platter. The sauce we so creamy and flavorful. I'm not an expert on curry by any means but the flavor was off the charts. Not spicy by any means. Forgot to take a picture...we ate it too quickly. We also tried a black pepper sauce dish with pork and vegetables. It was against very delicious. Goes well with a side of rice as well. Picture below.
We only tried a small portion of their menu but all the dishes were great! You can tell the chef in the back kitchen takes pride in the flavors he/she puts in these dishes. They aren't out of a bag I can garentee you that. We also tried a Thai iced tea and taro bubble tea. Iced tea was very sweet but I'm sure you could ask for it less sweet. Very unique drink of flavors that I've never tried before. I want to try the iced coffee next time. And of course taro bubble tea was delicious. Simple taro powder blended with milk and ice with bubbles but hit the spot for dessert.
I'm am worried about having such a delicious restaurant a couple blocks from my...
Read moreI used to live in Thailand for a while, and I would say this is the most authentic Thai tourist food I ever tried in Winnipeg. Lets be honest this is not Thai food for Thai people. This is adopted and softened version of Thai Royal cousine which is became extremely popular among tourists in Thailand. And it's almost perfect here! My selection: Tom Kha Kai (coconut soup with chicken) 5 out of 5 ! Next time I would like to try Tom Yam Kung with a bit of coconut cream probably will ask for the special order. Som Tam (green papaya salad) 4.5 out of 5 but it's still the best som tam in the city! Pad Thai 5 out of 5! Completely authentic taste. The same taste of the dish you can find all over Thailand. Any night market, any street cart, any cafe or restaurant. Golden bag - probably this is chiefs special. 4.5 of 5. I expected more Thai flavour. Calamari 4.5 of 5 this is not that Thai dish. It's tasty, it's crunchy but I can't remember anything similar I tasted in Thailand.
But again. This is the completely flashback place. After the first spoon of Tom Kha I was blowed out to the small beach restaurant somewhere on Koh Samui or Koh Chang or Koh Samet or any good place to eat there.
Thank you for your business, chief.
UPD. Something wrong with som tam salad this time. Can't believe that was...
Read moreTom Yum Thai is a great little Thai place in the heart of Transcona. If you're craving the flavors of Thailand, check this place out, you won't be disappointed. It's small, but kept very clean, including the washrooms, which are often neglected in little family run places like this. Atmosphere is typical small diner, not fancy, but comfy. The food is fantastic, hot (temp), spicy if you want it that way, or mild if you're of the sensitive taste bud type. Lots of selection, and your choice of protein in all dishes. My all-time favorite at Thai places is the Tom Yum soup, and it's perfect here. I highly recommend this place if you don't feel like the long drive downtown for most of the other Thai places. They are licenced, but only have a small selection of 2 beer or house wines (white or red). They also do alot of take-out, and Skip/Uber delivery if you don't feel like leaving home. Our per-person cost may seem high, but only because we added wine, and ordered enough for plenty of left-overs to take home for a second meal...
