Since leaving Regina, I've really had cravings for "Regina Style Pizza" & Winnipeggers were intrigued as to what that was. Well, this is as close as you can get. After scouring the city, someone recommended Vern's & it's so good! Sad that the closest location is an 18 minute drive away, but it is so worth it.
I had the 15" all-dressed & shared it with 4 Winnipeg friends. We loved it! I'm no pizza connoisseur, but this is pretty much 98% close to the "Regina Style" I crave; the dough seemed just slightly less fluffy & the cheese just needed about 5% more. It's a minor difference bit it makes ALL the difference!
One benefit (& I don't want to jynx it) is that Vern's in Winnipeg is actually considerably cheaper than many Regina-style pizza places in that city. A 15" all-dressed there would be $55 taxes-in (assuming you pick it up yourself) whereas I was pleasantly surprised that Vern's 15" all-dressed was "only" $46 (at the time of this review). That price may be a shock to locals here in Winnipeg, but honestly it's so thick & loaded that it easily fed 5 normal-sized adults.
Either way, I am so happy with their product! Thank you for your wonderful pizza & releasing it upon this...
Read moreSo here it is, 8 pm on a Friday evening, we walk into Vern's Pizza on McPhillips to get a couple slices. Prime time for a pizza joint, right? Especially emerging out of the pandemic, businesses want to make money and be on their game.
Nothing. Warming carousel is off. They won't make us any slices! They said "we only have cold slices in the back if you want that."
What a stupid marketing plan for the evening, and careless attitude for employees. They didn't even offer to heat up slices for us!! Terrible service.
Go figure, they weren't even busy. One order was picked up. We walk outside, another person is pulling up. She asks us if they have slices on the go, lol. Nope, they don't even have any on the go. She left. She wanted 4 slices, we wanted 2. That's $30 they just lost in about 5 mins.
Off to the competition!
The sad part is that this is the second poor encounter. Normally I would say that it's great pizza. Last time we ordered, they scorched the pizza. It was way overcooked.
They did give us a discount NEXT time, but it was supposed to be something special for the mother in...
Read moreI was driving by after midnight and saw that they were still open and remembered they used to have cold slices for pretty cheap. So I turned around and sure enough they had a few cold slices left for $2.50 each. This is a quality pizza, with good crust, sauce and ample good cheese with lots of meat. Probably the best slice in town available after midnight and definitely the best at that price if you don't mind it cold or warming it up at home.
I wish I could give a 4.5 star review because I can't quite go with 5 stars. My only complaint about Vern's is that because they use so much meat, I find it a bit salty. At some point I'll have to order a full pizza with a bit more veggies to meat ratio. Most of their popular pizzas, which they sell by the slice, which become their cold ones, are meat heavy. But I can definitely live with it for one or two slices. No saltier than most other quick, cheap options...
