I've been to many boba places around the world and used to work at Gong Cha, and the drink I got here was among the most cloyingly sweet drinks I've ever had. I'm always wary of getting too sweet a drink at a boba place—normally I'd get 0% sugar for a fruit tea, which typically has both fruit syrup and sugar syrup added, and 50% sugar for a milk tea, which is sweetened only by sugar syrup (and the boba itself, which is usually mixed with brown sugar).
I got the jasmine green milk tea with 50% sugar and it was almost undrinkably sweet. I would have thought they made a mistake and gave me full sugar, but my partner got the osmanthus and oolong milk tea with 75% sugar and it was actually undrinkable for me, definitely far sweeter than say coke. When we got home I mixed my drink with a bunch of ice and stirred it up to water it down, and it was still super sweet but drinkable.
I'm giving 3 stars because the quality of the pearls and the tea seemed good, though the amount of sugar made it hard to appreciate/taste them properly. I have a feeling the sweetness was partially due to the sweetness of the pearls and the sugary liquid they're stored in. The shop may not have accounted for the sweetness the pearls add.
Now of course, I could go back and order with less sugar and get a drink more to my taste, but I think it's ridiculous for 50% sugar to taste like this and absurd for a drink with 75% sugar to be as sweet as frosting. People who are new to boba won't always know how much they need to reduce the sugar, and the base flavor of the drink with no changes made to sugar or ice should be good. I would suggest that VJoy consider recalibrating the flavor of their drinks bearing this in mind. Less sugar allows you to taste the drink and toppings better. It would also be healthier for the community to have less sugary drinks. And even if the shop reduces the base amount of sugar in their drinks, they could add an "extra sugar" option for people that really do want an absurdly...
Read moreFound this special little place by chance 2 weeks when Googling bubble tea at 1145pm (they close at midnight yahoo!!). Was cursing the boredom of late night Winnipeg (what happened to the 4am closers and 24 hour places anyhow?!) and realized I better book it over to get my tea asap. I got there 3 mins before closing, was welcomed happily though I apologized profusely for flying in at closing time. I dod retail and we all know and hated these last minute people that kept us late each time. But no, they were great. Best part for me is, as someone that needs to watch my sugars, I could select my level of sugar from nearly zero to 100%. Although they assured me it would be very plain tasting at near zero, having never had the option before I tried it and honestly didn't notice much difference. So, I've been back at 3 times already. I also tried some of their food offerings and they were all great too. It is very much like Korean or Taiwanese street foods. I hope they start offering Korean style hot dogs or simple items to make at eat like that on the go. Their unlimited toppings, cute reusable cups and pleasant personality makes this a special place. So many of these places I go to are very order in, order out in nature. Very transactional. I don't know if the younger guy and girl were the owners 2 times I went and thus have a vested interest in being nice but even their 2 younger staff were awesome. They care about the business and it shows for top to bottom....
Read moreDirty store! This is my second time here. First time was okay, this time when I order the lady was okay, not nice but not rude. However, I was standing there and watching her prepare some ice cream for someone else. She used her hands and picked the ice cream then put it in the box without gloves. She tried to hide what she was doing. She kept using her hands to put the ice cream in the box (but she did not know that I was watching her the whole time). While she made the ice cream she even pick up her own phone then licked her fingers then back to made ice cream. Eww gross! Plus, when I received my drink, the ice in my drink had all melted when she handed to me (I guess the milk tea was hot that why my drink had no ice even thought they just made it. Then my husband and I noticed the pudding in my drink does not looked smooth. It looked like it had dust inside. We decided to through the drinks away cause I dont want a stomachache I think they might have to make everything in the store cleaner. All the syrup bottles look dirty. The chairs was dirty I would never go back after seeing...
