Honest Impressions of Balkan Eats – Woodstock
I recently visited Balkan Eats in Woodstock with genuine excitement to support a local business offering a taste of the Balkans. The experience, however, left me with mixed feelings.
Upon entering, we were greeted with a casual, almost indifferent welcome: “Here are menus, sit where you want, there are drinks,” accompanied by a vague gesture toward a fridge stocked with Walmart-brand water and generic soda. This initial interaction set the tone—informal and somewhat disorganized.
Shortly after we sat down, the male owner approached and asked directly, “Do you want ćevapi?”—the staple grilled dish—without giving us a moment to explore the menu or consider other options. We politely declined and opted for burgers, but before we could ask for fries or salad, he had already disappeared into the kitchen. When he returned, we asked about fries and were told it would be “at least fifteen minutes.” We were happy to wait, but the rushed and fragmented service made for an awkward dining experience.
The owners appear to be a couple running the place while caring for their infant child. Their effort to create a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere is noted, but the environment—particularly with a ten-month-old baby in the middle of it all—felt more chaotic than warm. This is not a criticism of the child, but rather an observation of the overall lack of professionalism in managing both a business and child care simultaneously.
There were no check-ins during our meal—no one asked, “Is everything alright?” or “Would you like anything else?”—which gave the impression that guest experience is not a priority. The atmosphere leaned more toward unstructured and reactive than welcoming and attentive.
As for the food: it was acceptable. Not exceptional, not terrible—just average. For those familiar with Balkan cuisine, there are several establishments across Ontario offering a far superior standard. The restaurant prices are reasonable, perhaps slightly high considering the food quality. However, the prices in the small attached retail section are unexpectedly steep, with a very limited selection of goods.
Cleanliness is another area that requires attention. While not outright unsanitary, the space lacked the level of care and maintenance one expects from a dining establishment.
In summary, Balkan Eats is an experience—one with potential, but in need of improvement. I would consider returning at some point, if only to see whether progress has been made. With greater attention to cleanliness, professionalism, and customer service, it could become a far more enjoyable...

We've been reading such good reviews of Balkan Eats, that we FINALLY decided to stop by and dig in !!! It was AMAZING !!! Can't say enough good things !! It's a converted steak house restaurant at the rear of a wee strip mall (Sleep Country Canada out front, is the anchor store) with ample parking out back. It's a mix of packaged store items for purchase and two areas for eating (tables and chairs and booths in the rear). The cash counter area also has fresh menu/special food items for sale. EVERYTHING is homemade fresh and you can tell !!!
My wife and I ordered the chicken dumpling soup (with AMAZING homemade bread for dipping!), the cabbage rolls (with mashed potatoes) and chicken schnitzel (with mashed potatoes). Both were BURSTING with flavour and very generous portions ! For dessert, we had the custard cake (krempita) (OMG!!) and chocolate-layered square fingers and they did not disappoint !!!
Added to our experience was the personable owners who ensured that we had our questions answered and our bellies full the entire time !
We WILL be...
Read moreI walked in and the staff were sitting around chatting. Wasn’t acknowledged. No food was cooking so it was unclear if they had any food for takeout. I looked at the display case and it was disappointing and I know my Balkan food. Took a look around at the other merchandise and didn’t see anything interesting. Would not go back.
In response to Balkan Eats’ comment: Who said I came in yesterday? Google prompts users to review locations and businesses for weeks after users paid a visit. I have posted many more positive reviews than negative reviews. When I post a negative review, the business always acknowledges that they could do better and thank me for the feedback instead of resorting to name calling the customer/reviewer. Your customers work hard too. They are paying more and getting less, so when they want to spend their money on takeout or dining in, they expect a good experience. Thank you for showing your...
