Review of Birchwood Cafe in Yellowknife, Canada (4 Stars)
Birchwood Cafe is a charming spot and probably the best place in Yellowknife to grab a quality coffee. My wife and I stopped by for breakfast, and overall, it was a lovely experience with just a few minor points keeping it from being a full five stars.
I ordered a hot vanilla latte, which was excellent—smooth, perfectly balanced, and just the right amount of sweetness. My wife opted for the iced vanilla latte, and she agreed it was just as fantastic. It’s clear they take their coffee seriously, and it shows in the taste and presentation.
We both tried the sausage breakfast sandwich on our first visit and it was fresh-tasting with quality ingredients. The bun was soft, the egg cooked perfectly, and the overall combination was satisfying. My only critique is that the sausage itself, while locally made (a nice touch!), had a bit of a bland flavor that didn’t quite stand out. Still, I appreciated the effort to use locally sourced ingredients, which adds to the cafe’s charm and ethos.
The breakfast sandwich with bacon proves to be our favorite offering, just add cheese.
One downside to the experience was the lack of WiFi, which might be a drawback for those looking to work or linger while enjoying their coffee. However, the cozy ambiance and friendly staff made up for it, and it’s a great spot to relax and recharge.
In summary, Birchwood Cafe is a delightful place to enjoy a well-crafted coffee and a fresh, locally inspired meal. While the sausage wasn’t quite to my taste, everything else was excellent, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Yellowknife. It’s a standout among local cafes and...
Read moreMy family and I enjoyed our breakfast at Birchwood and will be back next time we're in town.
The atmosphere and ambiance at Birchwood are great. You really feel like you're in a community space. We liked seeing local artists pieces for sale and a variety of small batch coffees.
The menu is impressive for a small cafe. Lots of options with different choices than you see at other places in the area. The Bannock breakfast sandwich was good, but could have used more than the two tiny pieces of cheese that were on it. Some seasoning would have helped as well. The frittata was more of an omelette, and like the sandwich was a bit too small for the price point.
The homemade cinnamon buns were totally delicious and the coffee was also very good. Next time we visit we'll stick to the coffee...
Read moreMy partner and I stopped by around 4pm during the week mid-December 2023. It was quite crowded, but it was a cozy atmosphere. There are four seats at the front window counter, three tables of four, and two tables of two, plus four comfy chairs in the back. We got the soup of the day (a lentil and veggie concoction which was tasty), a chai latte (not the most flavourful that I've ever had, but good enough), and an espresso (which my partner said was really great, and he's a pretty big coffee snob). They have a rewards card where once you buy 9 drinks you get your tenth (medium sized) for free. FYI...
