Jah Bar… Forward I came here because Jamaican Reggae artist was performing (don’t be surprised about a Chinese Reggae connection as some of the biggest musicians in Jamaican reggae have a Chinese route/root like Byron Lee). So glad I schlepped all the way out here. The decor is different to the chi chi bars in Lan Kwai Fong, and background beats are roots rock reggae (not ragga), so conversations are not drowned out. The jam sessions are real, takes me back to Cool Note days in Brixton, where anyone could step in and play, it’s more about the vybz than the technicalities — jaming on C minor for 20 minutes? Why Not?

Un bar colorato sul fiume di Chengdu

Era una sera tranquilla a Chengdu, e dopo cena ci siamo lasciati guidare dal suono sommesso delle voci e dal bagliore caldo di luci colorate fino a questo piccolo bar nascosto tra gli alberi, proprio lungo il fiume.

Il posto aveva un’anima sua: sedie pieghevoli, tavolini in legno, ombrelloni sbiaditi e pareti decorate in modo improvvisato ma autentico. Niente di studiato, tutto vero. Giovani cinesi sedevano all’aperto, chiacchieravano piano, qualcuno sorseggiava un cocktail, altri scrollavano lentamente lo smartphone, senza fretta.

Dietro il bancone, un fratello e una sorella gestivano il bar con un’energia contagiosa. Sempre sorridenti, gentili, attenti. Non parlavano molto inglese, ma si capiva tutto: accoglienza, semplicità, genuinità.

Abbiamo ordinato due drink da una lavagna blu fluorescente piena di cocktail scritti a mano: niente menu patinati, ma tante opzioni, da un Moscow Mule a un Long Island Tea. Abbiamo scelto, ci siamo seduti in mezzo agli altri e abbiamo lasciato scorrere il tempo. Senza Wi-Fi, senza aspettative.
