This is a new, and solid property in Chengdu. Taxi from the airport was 60RMB. As it’s only been open for about 2 months, taxi drivers aren’t aware of where the hotel is, even if you give them the address (99 Tidu). They’ll stop the cab at 88 Tidu (I presume it runs out of street numbers at that point), and then get confused. You’re there. Scan for the high rises around that area and you’ll see the St. Regis beside an empty plaza on the corner of the intersection. The hotel entrance is actually half a block down on Taisheng South Road.
At this point, the hotel is mostly a smooth operation. All the staff are friendly, and proactively try to help. Everything from asking if you need anything to walking you to the elevator. I was upgraded to a Lafayette Suite 5 days out using SNAs. The room is pretty large, and has a really nice and functional U-shaped layout (living room on one side, bedroom on the other), making me feel right at home. The bed is super soft, with a bit of a heavy comforter. WiFi is fast, and free (I was never asked to enter my room number). The bathroom is large, and has plenty of towels and large sized toiletries. The toilet is a fancy Toto washlet that will raise its cover as soon as it detects you.
One cool feature is that the room comes with an iPad, where you can control anything in your room (curtains, lights, and A/C). You can browse the room service menu and order your meal, or request items from housekeeping. Pretty much everything you can think of! It’s a really functional gadget that left me very impressed.
The gym has a good selection of cardio machines and weights, and is open 24/7. Platinums get a full breakfast in addition to the 500 point amenity. Breakfast itself has a wide variety of items, all of which are high quality and prepared in an upscale way. Some of the food items were switched up everyday so you don’t have the same thing every morning. There’s ice cream too! My only nit was that while there was “dim sum”, I didn’t recognize any of them. It would have been nice to have some classics like siu mai. Was hoping for some junk/comfort food such as fried rice or chow mein, but none was to be had. The dinner buffet looks to be a decent spread, and runs 238+ RMB. I felt food prices in the hotel were quite reasonable.
Platinums also have access to Happy Hour in Decanter that starts at 5pm. You get drinks listed on the menu, followed by a pick of 5 items on the food side. It sounds like a lot, but each choice is a small amuse bouche. It took 25 minutes for my food to come. I had to remind the waiter of my order, and he went to the kitchen and got it for me. After that experience, I didn’t bother going the second night.
The concierges, while friendly, really don’t add much other than helping you flag a taxi. If you need information, they’ll literally do a search on the web. I requested a quote for a private driver to the Giant Buddha, and they didn’t seem to understand what I wanted. They recommended that I take a bus instead. They didn’t even offer up the possibility of a group tour. I ended up negotiating with a taxi driver on my own.
But aside from a few very minor spots, this hotel lives up to the St. Regis name. I’ll definitely be staying here again when I...
