Guangzhou 东山小厨 is well-known for its 烧鹅 (roast goose), and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The skin was beautifully crisp, with just the right amount of fat rendered, while the meat remained juicy and flavorful. The marinade infused into the goose gave it a deep, savory taste, complemented by the slightly sweet glaze on the skin. The accompanying plum sauce added a nice tangy contrast, enhancing the overall experience.
Apart from the 烧鹅, we also tried several other dishes: • 白斩鸡 (Poached Chicken): Smooth and tender, with a natural sweetness in the meat. It was served with a fragrant ginger scallion dip that elevated the flavors. • 菜 (Vegetables): Fresh and simply prepared, letting the natural flavors shine. A good balance to the heavier dishes. • 鼓汁猪肉 (Pork with Black Bean Sauce): Well-marinated and flavorful, with a rich umami taste from the fermented black beans. The pork was tender, and the sauce had just the right amount of depth. • 蒸鱼 (Steamed Fish): Delicate and perfectly cooked, with a light soy sauce that enhanced the freshness of the fish. The texture was silky, and the dish showcased the quality of the ingredients.
Overall, 东山小厨 delivers on its promise of authentic Cantonese flavors. The 烧鹅 is definitely the highlight and a must-try for anyone visiting. Would you return for...
Read moreA very old and established brand in Guangzhou city. Traditional Cantonese cuisine. The place has 4 floors of dining from second to fifth floor.
As with all Cantonese restaurants in Guangzhou, the must order items are soup, chicken or goose, fish, pork or beef dish and vegetables. We chose chicken over goose, braised beef tendon (daily special), a Sichuan Pepper poached fish slices and a veg. I forgot the name of the soup.
All dishes were on par and the service was excellent. Manager and waitresses will banter with you whilst serving, asking how’s the food etc.
