What is a review of perfection, to be precise? Is it even conceivable in the confused, tormented psychological state of mind known as human consciousness? And from a critical social theory perspective, are not all reviews reflections of bourgeois consumption, the output of content that is in general, like all social activity, merely illustrative of the leisure and interests of a certain class of people, and more importantly, unforgivably ignorant of power dynamics and class struggle?
With great anticipation, I slice open the warm bun made of unbleached flour and seeds. Surprisingly - delightfully - its soft innards are studded with hazelnuts, like so many stars in a glutinous solar system. I remind one of the waitstaff for the accompaniments of soft butter and tart jam (nothing is perfect, after all). La tortilla espinaca arrives, and in a soft, patient voice, it speaks to me: "I am full of vegetables. Bask in my glory."
Where am I? Is this real? Can it be?
Did I mention the good, cheap coffee? The long list of smoothies? The enormous selection of bulk foods, gluten-free options, vegan products? In a sea of meaty, deep-fried trans-fats, Salud Pan stands out from other eateries in Medellin as truly exceptional, in that to my knowledge no other place like it exists here.
Every five minutes or so, another food vendor parks his moped in front of the wide verandah and wanders in past the relaxed patrons to bring some delivery of Colombia's enormous bounty to the kitchen, like ants to their queen. Some carry stacks of fresh eggs, others baskets of shining fruits and vegetables.
My thoughts drift with the music. There's no aggressive indie-synth desperately pleading "we're cool" to be heard over the stereo speakers here, just some good ol' mellow Wilco. What a...
Read moreThis place is a gem. They have a market section where you can get a lot of gluten free and natural foods. They also have a good variety of vegan cheese, vegan cold cuts, vegan desserts, vegan ice creams/sorbets and a huge variety of breads.
The service is amazing. Every person that works there is kind and attentive. They always greet you with a smile and always ready to help you find products you need or even introduce you to ones you might find interesting. They even remember we’re vegan!
Why am I giving ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️? Well, the vegan options they have are good but not amazing. It’s confusing because they have big signs about organic, plant-based food and then they serve meat. The market section is basically on their walls and the tables are too close so when you’re looking at items you feel like you’re bothering people that are eating. Also the refrigerated section is right where the servers go in and out of the kitchen so you’re...
Read moreSaludpan was recommended by Diana, our guide for the Real City Foodie Tour. She said the food was amazingly delicious and healthy. Spot On!
They offer several dishes on their Menu del Dia; including raw and vegetarian. This complete 'soup to dessert' meal is also served on Saturdays which is atypical.
I enjoyed a very generous serving of Grilled Salmon w Curry Sauce. I was a little concerned that the curry would overwhelm the fish. It did not; delicious and nicely seasoned.
The meal also included a bowl of Creamy Spinach Soup, Salad w Beets, Pickles & Greens. Portions of such size that I could have made a meal of just the soup and salad. The 'taste' of sweet yogurt, berry sauce and granola was a perfect end.
I'm in the neighborhood for 6 weeks and I will be back!!
