Taquería Mazatlán — Restaurant in Liberia

I am from San Diego, California and grew up on incredible Mexican food. I have spent many months in Mexico too. This place has probably the best al pastor that I have found outside of Mexico (out of 78 countries visited).

The al pastor, guacamole, salsa and chips are all authentic and outstanding.

Get the Mexican tacos over the Tex Mex crispy tacos since there is much more meat and far less lettuce filler. Add a side of guacamole or chips and guac.

The a la cart tacos are plenty filling for lunch but those in the Mexican Tacos plate are larger in size. You can get any type of meat even though the menu says beef or chicken.

The Colombian owner Juan is super cool and shares a similar passion for Mexican food. He was also very helpful with restaurant info since I want to build a Mexican restaurant in Nicaragua.

Don't go here. Food was ok, but the waiter ripped us off. Our meal cost $30 for my wife, my son and I. We have been in Costa Rica for five days eating at all kinds of restaurants and paying in dollars. Everywhere we have gone, have been incredibly fair with the exchange rate. I handed this guy $40 to pay for our $30 meal and he gave me the equivalent of $5.44 back. When I questioned him about it he rudely said sorry that's our exchange rate. I said we have gone to many restaurants and none of them rip us off like this. He said that wasn't their policy. Needles to say, it's not worth it. Go to McDonalds across the street which was very tasty and half the price, with a fair and honest exchange...

We stopped here after flying in to the Liberia airport. It’s very unassuming but the food and service were great. Literally the BEST guacamole we had our entire trip in Costa Rica (we were there for a week and had chips and guacamole at just about every place we went). It was so good we wanted it to be our last meal before flying out again but we didn’t have enough time with traffic that day. The staff were super friendly and accommodating to menu item adjustments.
