I really look forward to enjoying local IPA's when I go to a brewery. I love hoppy and strong tasting IPA's that leave you with an impression of the people who made it. This brewery had lackluster brews with nothing unique to their beer. They were normal IPA's, not bad at first, but nothing to write home about. But the two IPA's we tried left nasty after tastes in our mouths, like when you drink water that has been sitting for awhile. This seems to be a continuous theme at Costa Rican breweries as this is the third brewery I have tried and it left the same nasty aftertaste. On top of unimpressive drinks, and the other drafts were not much better, the bar tender did not seem to care that I was there. It was hard to get his attention. I asked if they serviced the outdoor area (he said yes), then I sat for about 30 min before I realized they did not service anywhere but the bar. He laughed when he saw me as if he had played the funniest prank. My card was declined (it was fine after he tried it again). He used upturned display glasses for my flight, which seemed to be sitting there for a couple hours, without rinsing the glasses which is just poor practice. Overall not worth your time...
Read moreRating the drinks and food at Volcano Brewing, aka Vaqueros. At the hefty Costa Rican price of $6-8 a pint, this had better be a great beer. It wasn't. The Hazy IPA had a gross taste, so my friend and I returned them. The waiter brought us the standard IPA and that was just as bad. We shared the beers with friends at the table and all agreed it was "skunked" or the lines needed to be cleaned out. Food was hit and miss. Sushi was regularly good, but expensive for what you get. Fish tacos were not good- covered in a mayonnaise type sauce that drowned them. It's mostly American-style pub food. Having eaten there two dozen times over the past 6yrs, I must say that this year the quality had gone down significantly. On the converse, prices here have gone up a lot in the past few years and are as or more expensive than most places in...
Read moreI tried to order 2 half pints. He said ok then proceeded to try and pour me 2 full pints. I had to stop him and he then told me that despite having small glasses, he only served pints. If I wanted a half, he would charge me for a pint. Given one of the beers I ordered was a Belgian Tripel which is a really strong beer, which in Belgium you wouldn't even have the option of ordering a pint of, that's ridiculous. Nowhere in the world I've ever been doesn't do half pints on draught. I didn't want a pint so walked off. The 3 people in front of me all had a pint each (at the crazy $7 a pint) and one then asked for some water for her bottle. He tried to give her bottled mineral water and charge her for it. She said she wanted tap water, and he was pretty surly and made a face. Really didn't want to stay around someone so unpleasant so we...
