Perlas — Restaurant in Tempate

Perlas Gastro Pub used to be a fun place to go on Tuesday nights for karaoke. A bunch of my friends would come, sing songs, and spend a lot of money on drinks and food. Every single week.

Now, however, they have replaced the amazing DJ Chekelo/Alex with a new DJ, and the karaoke experience is dismal. The new guy does not keep things organized, people sing out of turn, and he took a break from karaoke to play some dance music with NINE non-karaoke songs in a row and only one couple was dancing to ONE of those nine songs. It is clear he does not know how to read the room and run a karaoke night as good as Chekelo does. Now my friends and I looking for other places to go on Tuesday nights like The Shack or Canatico or El Tiki Playa Flamingo.

We also talked to the amazing staff workers there-Greiven, Helen, Dancy, and Diego- they are worried about losing their jobs, which should not happen. They are nice and hard working and always attend to our needs.

If Perlas brings the old DJ back, we’ll be happy to bring our business back to that establishment, and I will be happy to delete this review.

We come here every week or two as a treat to ourselfs. I have personally only been here during the day, for breakfast or for lunch, and it is never to busy for my husband and I then, which we prefer. I love to come here for food I eat in Canada, although they serve typical Costa Rican food as well! I Always find the staff friendly and what drags me back everytime besides is the games my husand and I like to play while we enjoy a drink or two in the afternoons. The bar has an open concept and there is a great scrabble board if you love scrabble, an arm wrestling table, beer pong and my persknal favorite....a bigger version of Jenga! And so many other games great for the kids and family all around. They have couchs we love and a pet friendly area for pet owners. Perla's also has themed nights like wing night, chase the aces and live music nights! Prices are on the higher side, but its no more than I would and have come to expect from similar restuants I have been to. I've been coming to Perla's for over a decade throughout various ownership changes. I'd been really happy with how the new ownership had been running things; I bring my basketball group there every Tuesday, and have a group of locals that love to sing together.

Just recently they fired the amazing DJ Chekelo (Ezekiel/Alex) who was one of the main reasons we love karaoke at la Perla's so much. A true gentleman and MC, runs a professional show and knows when to bring in dance music. With respect, after two weeks of karaoke with the new crew, they don't know what they are doing. Some people would sing 3 songs before I got 1 song, and then the playing dance music when no one is dancing and lots of singers present is just a poor experience.

The service is amazing; Helen, Greyvin, Dancy, Diego, I love the people that work there. I go because the people that work there are amazing. I don't know why a great DJ was fired to be replaced with people that seem to lack any experience.

I hope they fix this, otherwise we'll have to shift our weekly...
