Konoba Rafaelo — Restaurant in Grad Zadar

We were looking forward to try this restaurant because the pictures and reviews were looking so good for the food. Unfortunately our excitement was quickly gone when we were seated by the unfriendliest waiter we’ve ever encountered. We were asking for recommendations and trying to get to know the texture and taste of the meats before ordering but were met with an unfriendly face. The waiter was talking in a very fast paced and not easy to understand way and first wanted to know in what language he should address us. When we said English it didn’t get any better. We ordered the platter and drinks and some cold plate and said we would like to receive them together. A couple minutes later he decided by himself that he will serve the cold platter beforehand. Asked for bread and received a look that could have almost been an eye roll. When I went to the toilet I accidentally tripped while passing the same waiter and only received a “Aha!” In the means of “can you not walk properly” which immediately destroyed the whole mood. We were watching the other waiters and all of them seemed to be very nice and engaging in the banter...

Without a doubt the worst experience we've had in Croatia so far. Called up in the afternoon to make a booking for 6:30pm, arrived on the dot, and were made to wait a total of 1 hour and 20 minutes for our food. An hour in to the wait I asked where our food was and I was told that they "had a big takeaway order which they were trying to get out, your food will be a couple more minutes". 20 minutes later, still no food. Unnaceptable excuse in my books. Whats the point of reserving a table if takeaway is prioritsed? Ontop of this, while hungry and agitated waiting for our 2 steaks, we watched as a couple who entered about 20-30 minutes after us enjoyed their food. Because of this we up and left. Not sure if this place has a bias towards locals but being an Aussie-Croat myself was extremely disappointing to see. To make matters even worse, we took an Uber just to get here because of how good the reviews were. Not the case for us. Would've loved to review the food, but we didn't even get that far! We recently visited this grill restaurant, and while there were some fantastic aspects, a few issues stood out. First, the positives: the quality of the meat is truly top-notch. Every cut is perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. The portions are also incredibly generous—you're definitely getting your money's worth. The terrace is a lovely spot to dine, offering a relaxed, open-air atmosphere that enhances the dining experience.

However, one major downside is the smoking. People are allowed to smoke everywhere, and there's no designated non-smoking area, which can be unpleasant for those who don’t smoke. Shockingly, even the waiters smoke! I witnessed one throw their cigarette on the floor inside the restaurant, and another casually tossed theirs into the grill. It detracted from what could have been a fantastic dining experience.
